I don't really have the resources to travel to the Korean consulate to do my interview. Has anyone heard of them doing Skype or telephone interviews.

I'm having a hard time believing that your interview is at the consulate. I think you must have misunderstood something somewhere.

I was told all first time visa applicants have to visit the nearest consulate to do a brief interview. Is this not correct?

The nearest consulate is in Chicago.

If it is, then it's very new, because I've never heard of it. You have to get some stuff signed/stamped/etc., but this can be done by mail and I've never heard of them needing to conduct an interview.

You can call and ask if they'd make an exception in your case. I tried to do the same with the consulate in Atlanta, but they declined my request. Good luck to you.

Sorry to hear that. I will contact them and see. Maybe the Chicago office is different.

They CAN require a consulate interview for new E2 visas, but they don't always. Neither my friend nor I were required to interview and we only live an hour away from the Korean consulate. It's entirely up to them if they will ask for it or not. I would definitely call and ask. Good luck!

I lived in CO and my nearest consulate was in CA. I called and told them I couldn't afford to pay for the flight. They told me to mail something (passport maybe?) and it was no problem. Smile
