You sound like a salesperson rather than a teacher. |
precisely correct. However, it must be a lot easier sleeping at night being a teacher. |

As a former salesman myself, I can attest to that. |

Wow this is beyond ridiculous.
When will the government admit that their approach to learning English is wrong? No wonder parents send their kids to hagwons.
It simply proves that English education is a joke here and is yet another example of how things aren't thought through properly.

And you had a six-figure salary and a Porsche before you came to Korea and you don't teach for the money but only because you love the kids so much, right? |

If I was an employer I'd throw any resume using all those words in the bin. It all sounds too painful.
"Dynamic"
Please. You mean you have little electrical explosions going on as you walk around and you power your own light source? |

Ahhh so you work for Amway. I wonder if I ever bought anything off of you on the subway? Glad you're not a bum like the rest of us. |

A few months ago at the GEPIK PLUS conference it was made known that GEPIK was in some budget trouble. Obviously the natural recourse would
be to trim the fat. The rumor was that higher level teachers would not be
renewed so they could bring in less experienced, less expensive teachers.
I didn't pay it much mind. That is until 4 of my friends have each had their
renewals declined. They had been working at the same school for 2-3 years.
When they tried to renew their contracts they were each told there isn't enough money to keep them on.
And today I was told there might not be enough money in the budget to renew my contract. This would be my 3rd year teaching at the school.
Is this happening to anyone else out there? Thoughts? Thanks. |
well I can tell you that at my school, this "rumor" is nonsense.
My contract expires in May, but when I casually asked my coordinator about the school's position on whether they want me or not want me around for another year (and yes I qualify for third yr + )
I was told I'm the school's first option which I take to mean I can stay as long as I want (or most certainly for another year).
I strongly doubt my salary will climb, I'd need to do a TEFL for that, and if I'm going to do one, it's not going to be the short hour online good only for Korea variety.
I'll give you confirmation when it becomes "official" but unless a higher up says no.. she wouldn't BS me, especially on stuff like this. If they could afford me last year, they can probably afford me this year. (and I'm making 2.2 plus rural allowance) |

Yeah, but you are a special case. Aren't you at a technical HS? It is not like you are that easily replaced anyway? There isn't enough big, strong, tough guys coming through with the specialist skills to do the job you were brought in to do. That is why they are keeping you. I bet that isn't the case across the board! |

well I am actually fairly big strong and tough, but there's always room for improvement in every single one of those areas. It helps being bigger, stronger and tougher at a tekkie school. Those qualities are respected by the wannabe hs dropouts.
I would figure however, that with the demand out there they'd have no trouble filling the position. I'm sure what works in my favor is simply that I am a known quantity that they're comfortable (enough) with. I've never taken a sick day, the students like me and they know I make the genuine effort, even if the little darlings choose not to learn anything.
I've learned (by talking to a Korean principal I am friendly with) that the biggest factor in those decisions is the willingness or unwillingness of your Korean coteachers to work with you. If they want you gone, you're gone. If they want you to stay, or are at least neutral on the matter and the higher ups don't have any issues with you you can probably stay.
I've been fortunate to never have any issues of significance with any of my coteachers in my time here. |

Things I've been hearing about Gepik firsthand and from friends tells me that's something's rotten in the state of Gyeonggi Do. Just talked to a friend yesterday telling me about her cousin and he's saying how much full of it the school who wants to employ him is.
He said they expect him to get to Korea in world record time tho they and the recruiter are just disorganised, took so long to tell him he had the job and then told him to do all the work and come here in a time period that's just impractical. He said his orientation will come later in the year but they are still telling him to come 5 days or so before his contract starts.
I know what I'd be telling a hagwon if they pulled that stunt, I told him he can say no because a couple of days early is reasonable but not that. Perhaps the home of foot and mouth disease, avian flu and TB is doing the usual paranoia about 'swine flu'. It's just an insult and I wouldn't be doing it regardless of it being a govt program or not.
The location is crappy to boot. Seems that the overabundance of applicants for crap jobs in Korea is making all these people who make the decisions mighty arrogant. |

Smaller schools are likely worse when it comes to co-teachers. |
