My new job's not working out, and it looks like my employer and I are going to go our separate ways (amiably). He assured me he would provide a release letter.
My official last day of work will probably be Monday, January 31st. However, I thought I heard there was a window where you must get a new job for the extension/release letter to be approved. Meaning the date given as your last day of work (on your release letter) must be two weeks (?) earlier than your application date for a visa transfer, or maybe even within two weeks of your first day of your new job.
Can anyone confirm this? I thought I heard 14 days. Hopefully my employer will be a little flexible, but I'm still a little worried. |

If you have a new employer already arranged then you should work with that employer to make sure the transition goes smoothly. What's even more important than this period is the willingness of your employer to go to bat for you. Its still amazing what can be done with a little money under the table. |

I finish my contract Feb 25 and have already received a release letter from my school to transfer to a new school and start March 2. The release letter says I work until the 25th and I can start working for a new school on the 2nd. I don't know if that helps. |

You can transfer your E-2 visa to a new workplace as long as your last day of work with your current job (stated on the release letter) and the first day of your new job (stated in contract) is within 14 calendar days.
You will need the following documents when you visit the immigration office to transfer your visa:
1. 2 signed copies of your new contract.
2. letter of release from your current employer
3. 1 reference letter from new employer (신원보증서)
4. new schools business registration number (고유번호증)
5. 90,000 won fee
6. alien registration card
7. passport
8. apostilled University Degree
9. apostilled Criminal Record Check
Items #8 and #9 are not necessary if you have already submitted them before or if the immigration office grants you an extension, in which case you will have to sign a document stating that you will submit those items during your next visa application. |

Thanks, Jinju Necklace. That's very helpful. You had me scared for a minute, though... about re-submitting my CRC and university degree.
But yeah, I just went through all that in November. Immigration should have them.
Anyway, I'll keep y'all posted if any part of the process seems to have changed. |

No, I speak of how it was when I first started out eons ago. Maybe it has evolved. I work on a base school in Korea now and I have no intention of being released or letting someone release me! |

The release letter is necessary because if you are on a E-2 visa your employer is your sponsor in Korea. The release letter releases your former employer as your sponsor and allows your new employer to become your sponsor in Korea. |
