Dozens killed, hundreds injured in Moscow airport bombing

A SUICIDE bomber has killed at least 35 people and wounded more than 130 others this morning.

"Today at 4:32 pm [local time] an explosion went off in the international arrivals hall of Domodedovo airport," the Russian investigative committee said in a statement.

An official with the investigators, Tatyana Morozova, told Interfax news agency that the blast happened in the baggage claim area.

Russian officials immediately opened a criminal investigation into the blast.

Initial reports suggested that the blast occurred in the baggage claim area of the airport, however Interfax reported later said it occurred in a lounge area near a cafe.

Planes from Dusseldorf, Odesa and London landed at the airport shortly before the attack. Arrivals and departures continued after the explosion.

Airline BMI confirmed that one of its flights landed in Moscow at 4:36pm local time, adding that all crew members had been contacted and accounted for.

The airline was waiting to hear from other passengers, but there was no suggestion that any were injured in the incident, Sky News reported.

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the current NATO secretary-general, condemned the attack on his Twitter account

"Deeply disturbed about the terror attack in Moscow and I strongly condemn it. NATO and Russia stand together in the fight against terrorism," he posted.|

A US State Department spokesman, David Siefkin, told Fox News that to his knowledge, no US citizens were injured in the incident, but he added that officials were monitoring the situation.

Russian president Dmitry Medvedev ordered a special security regime across the country's transport hubs following the blast.
