"Small" and "remote" are not synonymous. How remote can it be if it has a KTX stop? It's only 30 minutes to Jeonju, 40 to Daejeon, and less than 2 hours to Seoul. There's a Lotte mart, Emart, HomePlus, CGV, and a fairly good sized university. It's not like living in the sticks!

This is a little off-topic but I know of people who are right now the only waeguks in tiny, tiny Korean towns where you can walk from one end to the other in about five minutes. The whole town is a general store, a supermarket, some houses/apartments, the school and then the highway. The buses barely run in and out as well... and if you go into the next town over, you have to be back by 8 or you can't get home without a 30,000 won taxi ride.

That's what I would consider to be a hole... a combination of crushing loneliness, zero privacy, no conveniences, and absolute boredom.

I'm in a town that's not all that much bigger than above and I think it's pretty good. Clean air, beautiful scenery, plenty of friendly people (even if they speak zero English)...

Crushing loneliness...not really. I've long term friends (both Korean and foreign) in the same province and other provinces I see on a semi-regular basis .

Zero privacy...I go to my apartment if I want privacy. Being out and about is not the place for that.

No conveniences...Check but I can travel to the nearby city for that.

Absolute boredom...this applies more at work then for free time...at least for me. There are so many things to get involved in from Archery (there's a range about half an hour away from here) to TKD (about three academies 5 minutes away) that it's not really an issue.

What I'm most annoyed about is that the one gym here closed down and there's nowhere to train except in my apartment. Oh well, I'm out of here tomorrow and when I come back I can find somewhere that has a nearby weight room.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice. I've decided to give it another two months and see how things pan out. I spoke to my director about things and she's properly amazing. She said if I give her two months notice then I can go to Seoul or back to England or whatever.

soyoungmikey- I only wanna stay here for a year. I don't think Korea is a very good place for a woman. It makes Japan look radically forward thinking. I went to art school in London so I'm pretty used to pretentious and overpriced. I'm also female so I'm nt so down with hooking up with girls. Change that to men though and you may have a point.

IlIlNine- I had no idea that Seoul was so different to the rest of the country. Yeah I knew Iksan was probably not the place to go for it but I thought that Korea was Korea and I thought Daejeon would be a big city. One of my main issues too is that I didn't know how conservative things were here.

I'm not American, I'm English and we don't have that much exposure to Korean culture here. I'm not of any Asian decent either. Not offended you're just way off base.

PBRstreetgang21- Yeah I've heard that comparison been made about Iksan. Being from England though I don't really get it. You could be right. I just feel like I came to Korea for the pop culture and i've just realised not much else. Jeonju is pretty nice. But I don't like clubs that make me sit down every 15 mins. God damn you music bank. Do you know of anywhere that doesn't make you do that? Also, do you know if there's any kind of Japanese community there?

I prefer bars, I know a few ok ones near music bank depending on whether you're looking to meet or avoid foreigners. I also heard a new club opened in the new building where the KFC opened but haven't been in there.

Come to Jeonju and get yourself over to Radio Star on a Friday or Saturday night (or a Thursday for that matter. Or some Tuesdays.) It's a tiny little underground club/bar which has live bands, great music, cheap drinks, a fantastic vibe and the best foreigner community in Korea.

There's plenty of Brits here - and plenty to do as well, loads of stuff going on in Jeonju. If you just come and wander round and try to go to a clubby yourself, you probably won't have a great time - the best way to meet new people and have an awesome time here is to get involved with stuff that's going on. If you're on Facebook, just do a search for 'Jeonju' and join a few of the groups so you know what's going on, and come and join in - I guarantee you'll be welcome! (For example - You say you went to Art school? This might interest you then... http://tinyurl.com/Jeonjuartistscoalition ) - Plenty of people from Iksan come over here on a regular basis, being as there's not that much to do in Iksan. (You do have a damn good curry house and Asian food mart by the station tho!) Send me a PM if you want more info!

emmajuno-

I'd like to chime in and like the rest, I think leaving is a really, really bad idea. From your explanation, the manager is gold. More than gold, maybe platinum or friggin uranium. She is open to you leaving, hopefully won't shaft you or anything - and she pays on time/ahead of time (WTF?) you are down right screwy to want to leave early.

Let me explain:

You mentioned the others (in the place where you want to live) heard of your situation and are "sympathetic". I call bull. They are willing to shaft another business owner to help themselves, that's bad policy right there. What do you know of them? They are in Gangnam? A friend of a friend's mom? You will be walking on thin ice before you know it- you don't get much better than an honest hagwon owner here (I would know- I've yet to find one). They are probably willing to take you because you won't do any research about their hagwon, rather just take their word.

What's more, you only lived in this area for one month- have you joined a club? TaeKwondo? Exercise? Cooking class? Jogging? You very well may be just as bored with clubbing/pop culture in Gangnam as you are in Iksan. I'd suggest you up the personal activity level. Find something to dive into M-Th and Fr-Sa you will really 'know' what you want to do (Seoul/Busan/whatever) and your weeknight time wont feel 'lost'.

The issue most posters have is you don't know when you have it good. When you come back under a different handle complaining about your (new) boss, you know what to expect Idea
