I've done it indoors, but not in the winter. My house has a lot of rooms I don't use, so the past couple of springs, I used a lot of shelving to start a lot of plants so they could grow while it was too cold outside. This is especially important for plants with long growing seasons, peppers for example. After freezing and frost is no longer a danger, I would take them to a plowed field and transplant them in rows, usually in late April or May (in Tennessee). I've grown thousands upon thousands of tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and other plants in this manner. Other plants such as corn and okra, you can't really do this. The seeds really need to be sown directly into the fields.
Cucumbers are fast plants, so I don't think they ever intended to plant them outside, but I don't see any harm in what these people were doing. My guess is they're very health conscious people and wanted their cucumbers grown inside, away from insects, because they wanted to eat cucumbers grown free of carcinogenic pesticides. All cucumbers grown outdoors have to be sprayed...don't fall for the disingenuous "organic" labels. Plus, with the price of food these days, reducing their food budget gives them money they can put to other uses. |

My sister is living and working in downtown London and she went to a farmer's market near her apartment yesterday. She bought some raw milk (unpasteurized) and told the guy selling it that she couldn't even buy it in the USA because it's illegal to sell. The guy chuckled and said, "The home of the free isn't so free is it?" |

Actually there is no federal law prohibiting raw milk in the US. Its state by state. Furthermore raw milk is illegal in Scotland, which is part of Great Britian. |
