|
|
My job just fell through with an SLP school in Bongcheon, but luckily I'm not in Korea yet! Also the school kindly asked around at other branches and found two that are hiring. One is in Eunpyeong-gu, Gusan-dong, and the other is in Seocho, Seoul Nat'l University of Education Station on Subway Line 2.
As the job specs are all the same on paper it basically comes down to the area. I gather Gusan is near Hongdae and Itaewon but a little messy for metro trains, and Seocho has Gangnam and Line 2. Where would you rather live?
Any branch specific SLP info would also be much appreciated, thanks! |

Tear up the contract now and run. I have never known anyone to be happy working for the Slave Labour Program (SLP). If it is possible to do a search on this website, check it out. Run, run and keep running. They will make you do piles of useless shite that is not covered by your contract. The stipulated hours on paper are about 50% of the sweat they will want you to put in.
What do you want to come to Korea now for anyway? Korean winter sucks. Go somewhere warm. |

You must be a sucker for punishment or like to work 20% more in the classroom for the same or less cash than the next guy? Is there some reason you are so desperate?
21 classes of 80 minutes (with a 10 minute break at the mid point making it 21 classes of 90 minutes (1800 minutes per week on your feet in the classroom).
The next guy works 30 classes of 50 minutes (1500 minutes per week on his feet).
Those 300 minutes mean you work 5 hour per week more (in the classroom) for the same money.
The rest of the contract doesn't get any better.

As a Canuck who's waited for buses in -50C I feel well placed to handle the cold...not that I wouldn't mind a bit of tropical warmth, but SK's perqs have won me over. Anyway, I've invested so much time, thought and money on this venture that I'm determined to see it through, though Vietnam does beckon...
And thanks for your warning! I don't take it lightly, as I've read many of the posts decrying the Slave Labour Program. I'm definitely not going in blind. I also understand its branches aren't created equally. Why toss out the barrel for a few bad napa cabbages?
I've read blogs from people who have worked at the Eunpyeong school and they seem to find it decent, with a good community of teachers. I can't find much on the Seocho school except for a blurb about the director saying she lived abroad for decades and has a philosophy of keeping her teachers happy. It could be total guff, but the head waygook teacher has been there for 7 years. Also, having ready made lesson plans from SLP seems like it will be manna from heaven in my first year teaching. I'm willing to gamble on these schools, and if it's the shits I can always pull a runner, no? |

The new term starts March 2. It is now Jan. 26.
Wait a week.
There is NO SHORTAGE of hagwan jobs (find a couple (or 10) new recruiters to work with or a few more websites to browse for job listings if you didn't find anything here).
AND
in about 2 weeks, those public schools who didn't win a NET in the assignments from EPIK/GEPIK will start doing their own recruiting, independently from the programs (even though you will get the same contract).
Pulling a runner is not as easy as it sounds and there are complications (unless you have a double set of documents in your pouch).

That was REALLY nice of them to offer you Seoul.I know you see it as being screwed over..but at least they were able to get a great location * (that is more then most people would be able to get). Seoul jobs are very very competive, so chances are you won't be able to find that great of a location AGAIN before the March 2nd start date (A public school
anywhere even close to Seoul National nor Eunpojeong). |

Having just gone through the process finding my second job, I got 3 contract offers. And I'm not looking to start until mid-March.
I agree with ttompatz. Work with a bunch of different recruiters and browse the job postings. Don't sign with SLP just because they're the only ones who've offered a job. I would wait until your second year working in Korea before considering SLP. That way you have a little bit of experience. Also, don't sign with SLP unless you PERSONALLY know someone working there, like another teacher. Then you can ask them what the school is like and get a more honest opinion. Yes, not all SLPs are evil and soul sucking but a lot of them are. As one Canuck to another, I personally wouldn't take the risk of SLP without doing a lot of research.
Keep on lookin' for another job. You have plenty of time to find a good job. |

Yes, grand of them, absolutely, and I don't feel like I've been screwed over at all. The first deal fell through because enrollment was down. I'm just glad they told me now and not a month after I've been there. They were sorry about it and tapped the grapevine for a new job. I only found out about this today, but my recruiter had these two opportunities ready right away, and in Seoul, which was spectacular. Gone2Korea and SLP have been really good to me, square dealing and fast.
In fact, I just interviewed for both of these jobs about an hour ago. I had hoped for Seocho(bcuz of the centrality and subway lines), which I interviewed for first, but the conversation didn't really click and I wasn't surprised they didn't offer me the job. In better news, Eupyeong SLP has hired me to start in the middle of Feb.
I'm not bummed about losing out on living in Gangnam. Seems like a glitz machine, shit with a perfume veneer. I couldn't care less about Louis Vuitton(actually I could, I get riled whenever I see one of those HIDEOUS bags). I like a bit of grit and Eupyeong, being a "slum"(as I've seen it called here) should check that box, plus being close to Hongdae could be great.
Anyway it's all a big roll of the dice, but I'm feeling good about everything.
To ttompatz and FDNY:
I let you know in a few months if you told me so. |

I worked at a good SLP, in Ilsan. I'm pretty sure it's the ONLY good SLP.
If you don't have an offer from the SLP in Ilsan, say no. There is no reason coming to Korea just to end up running after everyone told you not to go there.
At the very least, add the other teacher's on facebook, and see what they're saying about their job. Trust me, everyone will post a status update about hating their job. |
