hi

I have a friend coming in March and he'll be in Uijeongbu-si.

Anyone know anything about this area? Is there expat stuff to do? I know its only a little outside of Seoul, but is the area fun? He's not gonna have any kind of orientation, so I worry he'll be sitting in his apartment scared to go out side due to all the neon signs, stares, double polled barber shops and the rest of the silly korean things.

I live in the way south so I can't check it out.

thanks in advance

Downrange from Camp Casey he will find lots of distractions to occupy his time and help separate him from his income.

Otherwise he can get to Seoul in about an hour or so.

Uijeongbu Station is actually only three subway stops away from Dobong-gu, Seoul. Jongno 3-ga takes about 40 minutes, Hyehwa about the same, and Hongdae/Sinchon around an hour. Ttompatz is talking about a section of another city called Dongducheon that is another 30 minutes north of Uijeongbu Station. That area, Bosan Station, is interesting but still a bit far. Downtown Uijeongbu has plenty of restaurants and bars, some of which cater specifically to foreigners.

40 minutes north of Uijeongbu station is Yangju which has a kill animal shelter. Your friend should spend all his free time helping the dogs that will most likely die after their owners abandoned them.

Someone told me that Uijeongbu is about to undergo a big transformation after they finish the giant shopping mall/complex near the station.

I didnt personally care for the place (nightlife wise) but if you're in Gyeonggi its a pretty good deal I think. It's a modern city thats close to Seoul and has plenty of ways to get foreign goods since you're so close to the US military bases.

The city is also building a monorail. Its an eyesore but I imagine it will make getting around easier.
