Hi all,

So initially I applied to EPIK. I had the interview, passed, sent everything in, and was told I had a spot locked up for Seoul. In December, my recruiter informed me that I did not pass the 'final round' (potentially because EPIK requested an additional transcript and I contacted them directly to ask what the problem was). Afterward, my recruiter told me if I applied for GEPIK that I would '100%' be able to find a spot to teach in March. I sent in the application package, then was contacted last week about an interview with a school for last Sunday. I blocked out my time and sat by the phone, but I didn't get a call. Emailed the recruiter 1 hour after the allotted time and they contacted me back in 20 minutes saying the co-teacher to do my interview was in class, and would call within the hour after they had finished. Again, I never got a call. Sent another email which was replied to saying 'we'll contact the school to find out what happened.' Finally, I've received an email stating that there was a 'miscommunication' between the head of the english department and the co-teacher, and that they planned to reschedule. Until then, I've been instructed to 'wait patiently.'

My patience is running thin.... My question to all of you is at this point in the application process should I just ride the wave and hope for the best considering time is scarce? Or should I bail on my recruiter for someone else and start looking for hagwon jobs so I can get my ass to Korea?

If your patients is running thin now, Korea may not be the best place for you. This is normal behaviour in Korea, for most aspects of life in Korea.

Why don't you do both? Work with this recruiter to get an EPIK job. Work with other recruiterS (in the plural) to get hagwon jobs. There is no law saying you can't work with multiple recruiters.

Do you think they are working with only one school or with only one teacher?

The only rule is you can't double apply to EPIK or GEPIK, otherwise it is an automatic rejection.

Hey Socky, I'm in the exact same position. I applied to EPIK for Seoul, passed the interviews and had docs in in good time and approved, then found out 2 weeks ago that I was rejected at the last minute by SMOE, no reason given and there was nothing wrong with the transcripts as far as I know. Ive just applied through a bunch of recruiters now, off craigslist and here, I had an interview on Sunday morning for a public school in Pyeongtaek but havn't heard back yet. Does anyone know how long it usually takes for public schools to make a decision? As for EPIK, that programme is beyod a joke. They still have my docs, the recruiter I was with has assured me I'll get them back, but then he assured me I'd get a job as well. I need the docs if I do get offered another job. EPIK can't seriously expect to keep your highly personal documents if they don't offer you a job. Have you got your docs back Socky?

As far as I know, I have not. But my FBI CRC never made it to EPIK. The recruiter has it. The recruiter told me I shouldn't need to get any more docs so... I guess they expect to get them back from EPIK as well. <.shrug.>

You initially applied to EPIK? You thought this would get you a school in Seoul? SMOE is for Seoul.

If you are going through a recruiter, then you can talk to as many recruiters for GEPIK jobs. These schools are not working through GEPIK, but instead a recruiter. They may be funded and have special programs.

So, it is in your best interest to line up as many of these interviews. Don't wait for 1 phone call. Schedule many of them and pick and choose which ones you want.

Give yourself at least 3 weeks to decide.

There are head English teachers. The co-teacher is the person you work with mostly though. If there was a co-teacher at the school, then there was also a native English teacher. The school wouldn't have hired just the Korean teacher. So, ask to speak with the native English teacher.

So far, this recruiter hasn't given you a solid base to work from. Personally, I would get all the documents in hand and go to the interview in person. I wouldn't trust a recruiter. You can go to immigration with the school and get all the visa arrangements sorted. I even went by myself twice and it actually went faster, because with a Korean person immigration will ask a whole bunch of questions. Here in China, it's pretty much the same thing. In Japan, they have a long procedure, but if you are on time you can also get it done by yourself. The recruiter is not a surrogate parent, you aren't dependent on them or need just one.

It's time teachers stop obeying this one recruiter one school rule.

You don't think the recruiter is slow in getting the docs back to avoid your signing through someone else do you? Nah, not possible! Shocked

So it looks like I will not be getting documents back from EPIK. Luckily, my recruiter still has my FBI CRC (and has offered to return it if needed). So all I have to do is get another copy of my apostilled degree, which in my state I can have completed in a day.

This is probably bad news for you, though. I don't know if you could raise some hell and get that CRC back, but it doesn't look good.

Also, I ended up interviewing with a position in Pyeongtaek and it took them less than a day to tell me they wanted me for the job. I have to tell them tomorrow if I've accepted.

Unfortunately, I think I'd be very unhappy living there, so I will likely decline and just roll the dice that I can find another spot.

I've since put my resume in with several more recruiters looking for GEPIK positions... so everyone cross your fingers.

I've got a lead on a school in Suji (close to Bundang). Looked up some pictures and it looks nice, but some people on here were down on the place when I searched for it. Anyone live in Suji that likes it?
