I find it disturbing that a member of ATEK joined nearly two years ago and has spent all that time "wondering about this mostly mysterious organization".

This guy has been a member of ATEK for two years and is finally getting to the bottom "of what ATEK really is" by interviewing the president of ATEK?

Intriguing? No. It speaks volumes of how they are running things though, doesn't it?

While I liked what ATEK has done in the past year and change (toned it down, focused on realistic goals), these news releases keep popping up and giving ATEK a full credibility draining broadside....

They too often come off looking like a mickey mouse outfit.

So, this is a trailer for a comedy flick? What role is Jack Black playing?

There are high school chess clubs that are better run organizations. ATEK's leadership doesn't care about the issues that matter to foreign teachers in Korea. Exactly what "goals" are they focusing on? Enforcement of Korean laws with pension and health insurance? No. Visa portability? No. Enforcement of contracts and more power to Labor for enforcement? No. So, what's the main focus of the leadership? Good question, very good question.

Visa portability? No

This already exists with the F2-7 points visa.
Demonstrate that you're an asset to Korea and you can have visa portability.
It's a privileged and not something that should be handed out to every worker with a pulse.

Hey don't be too tough on them. It must be hard representing 20,000 English teachers in Korea. Laughing

Who said they represent teachers? Anyone can join. They changed the rules for the worse.

Their original claim(s) in the (Korean) press was that they represented ALL of the foreign English teachers in Korea.

Their credibility hasn't improved any since then.

Even Mickey Mouse has more credibility.

Wasnt their last campaign to make it easier for female "entertainers" to enter Korea? I mean! What has this got to do with teachers? They have never had any credibility to lose.

You've got them confused with that other group, the Association of Trafficking Entertainers in Korea.

That IS a great question.

What I meant was that compared to their first year which was a complete disaster, ATEK at least tried to fix the most glaring problems.

They stopped making shrill demands about Human Rights.

They stopped claiming to represent all foreign teachers.

They worked quietly on trying to build up their association.

They focused on key areas they felt were realistic.

From what I gather, their help center has assisted a fair number of teachers in trouble through advice, networking and other resources.

They are still a group of part-timers who wiork on ATEK issues when they have the time but perhaps thats all that can be done. ATEK as a network for teachers is already something better than what was before which was nothing!

Frankly speaking, and I always considered this the best course, ATEK should simple work on becoming a network for teachers where people can get information that can help them in one centralized place. ATEK should and in some respects has, build bridges with other organisations like KOTESOL to offer professional development opportunities to Teachers.

ATEK should steer well clear of any demands, advocacy campaings, Human Rights Abuse claims and so on because then they put themselves in a lose-lose situation based on the simple fact they have neither the credibility, resources, skills, knowdlege, expertise or staff to work on that level.

+1

Nearly two years as a member and he has no idea what the organization does? Shocked
