|
|
I have a KB Check Card, Kukmin Bank, and a A Plus Card from Woori Bank. My KB Check Card says that it works at foreign ATMs, the front of the card has a Maestro emblem in the bottom right. I would like to know if anyone has had success using their Korean check cards in the U.S. or abroad to make basic withdrawls from their accounts. Thanks |

In ALL cases, with Korea bank issued "international" cards it is best to NOT depend on it until you have actually used it abroad.
Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.
If you have internet banking set up you can access your account from abroad and transfer money to yourself if your cards won't work.

I'm in China right now, and, to my delight, my KEB card is working well. Of course, that doesn't mean your KB card will work. It's very easy to open a bank account at the Itaewon KEB. It might be worth it just for your trip abroad. |

Are there any KEB accounts with ATM cards that can be used abroad, but that the acutal account doesn't require an annual fee? |

Korean ATM cards / check cards don't have an annual fee nor do the bank accounts that they are attached to.
Use of Korean ATM cards (by foreigners) abroad is highly variable and never dependable.
Perhaps you should wait till you get here before you worry about actually getting an account. Until you have your ARC you won't get an ATM card anyway.

Yea, I'm in Korea already and have all my stuff. I just wanted to check other people's experiences with KEB. Based on KEB's english website, any of their cards offering overseas debit options require an annual fee of 10,000 won. |

I have a couple of KEB cards that are supposed to work internationally, but as ttompatz said are not reliable. I could not get them to work in Thailand last year. |

My KB star card didnt work abroad. I went into KB to ask it to be 'activated' for use abroad. They gave me a helpful sheet outlining the fees, which weren't too bad actually, the card still didn't work on my next trip though. |

Hey Seoul, do you pay an annual fee on those cards? Do you know name, type, of cards that you have? Also, did you sign a form saying that KEB would be the primary account for your foreign monetary transactions? |

I just heard from Kookmin Bank that people on F-4 visas CANNOT use their check cards to withdraw cash outside of Korea, but those on other visas for foreigners can. |

In that case you should try KEB, that's my plan. |

I've got a KEB check card. I could use it in Thailand last year but only for ATM cash withdrawl, not as a VISA card. |

I just got a KEB Global debit card. I'll test it if it works abroad. |

The problem doesn't lie with specific banks or cards but people's specific accounts.
Many times the account will be set up, the card issued but international access NOT turned on (even though the card is supposed to be international).
Yes, you can get cards that work abroad. Usually there is NO annual fee (unless it is a credit card).
The caveat is:
DO NOT DEPEND ON ANY SPECIFIC CARD UNTIL YOU HAVE ACTUALLY USED IT ABROAD. After you have confirmed by actual use then you are usually good until you change your card then the caveat applies again.
