I'm five months into my contract and have not taken a single day off work. The only time I've missed even a single class was when I was so sick that my boss literally forced me to go to the hospital.
Anyway, my father has informed me that he can visit me sometime this summer (end of June or anytime in July) for a few weeks. I'd like to take a week straight off of work.
What would your recommendations be for making this request of my boss?
Note: I am not interested in hearing "You'll never get it", "Quit dreaming", "HAHAHA, NOT GONNA HAPPEN" from all you naysayers. I just want some friggin' legit advice for once. |

| Don't you have a week or two of paid vacation written into your contract? If you do, that should be plenty of notice for you to question your boss about taking one of them when your dad comes. I thought most contracts offered a bit of paid vacation. If not, then I guess you're actually asking for a week of unpaid vacation, and seeing as how this is still several months in the future, and you have such a solid work history so far, he'd have to be quite the ass to deny you that. |

Well Corp, I have 12 days of paid vacation that I can use... the thing is, they can only be used (direct quote from contract coming),
| Quote: |
1. At a time negotiated between the employer and employee.
2. Taken on days designated by the employer.
3. Accumulated to be taken at certain time agreed upon by both employer and employee.
A paid day equals 6 basic teaching hours pay.
An employer may designate a maximum of 2 weekends ( 2 Saturdays and 2 Sundays) as part of the allocated paid days if it is to fit in with a specific holiday period the school that includes other weekdays as well. For example the summer break time when the school may be closed for 6 days
NB: There is no guarantee that any paid days will be issued in one successive block.
They cannot be taken by the employee prior to the qualifying month for them to be given. unless issued by the employer to fit a school holiday
There is no guarantee that two teaching staff members will be allocated holiday leave at the same time.

I get the impression that my director cares very little about some things (see teaching ability... as I most likely suck the big one), and yet goes ape sh*t over others (got yelled at for letting my kids call me Ryan instead of Ryan sansaengnim). Furthermore, I have not seen another teacher take a single day off since I've been here...
I want to bring this topic up with my boss next week, so as to give plenty of notice... but I don't wanna piss her off and make the next two months one big b*tch fest about everything I do. I think I can get the vacation, as I'm the sole foreigner and I'm fairly certain the school does not have the capital to afford to replace me. But as I already hate my job, the potential for hostile working conditions has me a little antsy. |

| I may also consider using 4 of the days so that for the last month I'm in Korea, I only have to work 4 day weeks... that would be nice, just like college (I only had a class on Friday for 2 out of my 8 semesters). |

The stuff I put in bold seems relevant. Just negotiate, be kind and considerate and expect the negotiation to take a few weeks with some brinkmanship thrown in. The key words are negotiated and agreed upon. The part about guarantee is just that there are no guarantees in life .
The only bad thing is the second clause. This seems to contradict clauses one and three.
The part about weekends is meaningless drivel. The part about the qualifying month is meaningless drivel.
The stuff about paid day being six hours and about two staff members is irrelevant.
My experience about negotiating is to make it seem that you will quit or go ballistic if you don't get your way, but never suggest this or make it seem that you feel this way. |

Friggin' naive ass ryleeys comin' over here... I honestly had no clue what the hell I was doing 6 months ago when I decided to come here and went through the subsequent process. I can only be thankful that I'm not in any worse of a situation... mostly, my situation isn't overly bad compared to what Korea can do to some people. It just isn't the right situation for me.
But I think this vacation thing is going to be real big in terms of deciding to finish my contract or just randomly disappear.
I would like to do the negotiating myself, without the Korean teacher translating... It's never been mentioned to me, but I get the impression that the last Korean teacher, a good friend of mine now, caught flack whenever she translated requests on my part to the director. There was one case where I was very insistant upon having proper medical insurance, and not just a 50/50 arrangement, as well as paying all of my proper taxes (I like doing things by the books). The Korean teacher came back to me the next day looking very unhappy and said the directors response was, "I pay him enough money, let him set up his own taxes and insurance." |

| Negotioate a time, tell your father when you have the week off, and thats it. Tell your boss that your father is coming over. Be honest and see how it plays out. |

Missed that your father had a flexible schedule.
Tell your boss to choose the most convenient week during that time. Tell him that is your compromise because you would prefer the second week in July (some lie why you would prefer a particular week- father's boss, cheap tickets, event in different city such as festival or something). Tell him you can compromise on this though because you realize how important his scheduling at the hagwon is.
If he refuses call him a family hating b*stard and if he doesn't fire you on the spot spend your remaining six months quietly undermining the business.
Lying like this seems to work well in Korea. They will | |
