I just pick my nails usually. My boyfriend and my best friend both noticed on the same day and suggested I buy nail clippers. Old habits die hard.

I can't find a decent pair of nail scissors in this country and I hate those cheap clipper things. Is there somewhere that I haven't looked? I am not talking about curved cuticle scissors, but a pair of decent nail scissors. I think that I got my last pair at Sephora.

Just the other week I saw this really attractive Korean girl on the subway. She casually takes off one of her shoes, peels off her sock, and starts clipping her toenails. What struck me is that no one batted an eye.

Very Happy Kidding!
But seriously, what is it with the SE Asian habit of letting the pinky nail grow long? Is that some virility symbol? I never did get a straight answer from anyone while living there. I've seen it in Bali, Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos.

To pick their noses?

Traditionally, one long pinky nail was a sign of wealth, in that they could grow long nails because they didn't do manual labor.

Mostly in America, a longer pinky nail indicates coke or other drug usage.

Although, I'll admit, my pinkies do tend to grow better than the rest of my nails. I guess because they don't really pull their weight compared to the pointer or middle.

Sure, long nails have always signified the elite class--taken to extremes in 19th century China and India--where the loss of functionality and utility was seen as a sign of superior wealth and intellect. But there's more to it than that. Something to do with maturity, manhood, virility, and style. It was even a fashion statement in Europe at one time. In the book, A House in Bali, the narrator talks about a peasant kid going through puberty and suddenly growing his pinky nail, and it had a different ring to it.

sorry OP but you are have been doing it wrong all along.

you start with the left thumb and work your way down to the pinky.
and with the toes too.

IN , out.

NOT, OUT IN.

it's logical really, start with the finger which is closest to you.
that would be the thumb.

so you put your pants on with the left leg or right leg first?

Something I'd never thought about before! Invariably, all my life, left leg first.

Once I really had to cut my nails but I had no clippers, and I'm too scared to use scissors.

So I found my Wire strippers most similar to this - http://www.ted-kyte.com/3D/Pictures/Wire%20Stripper.jpg

and had at it. Went surprisingly well.

Long pinky nails are common in S.America as well. I actually asked a Peruvian friend of mine about it, assuming it had something to do with cocaine and he said, "no, I'm not sure why.

Right. No one could give me a straight answer, either. Not one with any substance anyways. Kind of reminds me of tattoos and how they are popping up on almost everyone.

Filing your nails every night before showering is the best way to go.

But I also have my own obsession, I can't stand people type on a keyboard after they eat anything with their fingers..

Hope that makes you feel better.

YES! I'm glad I'm not the only one.
