Hogwons generally prefer Yale over Harvard, but you might still be able to get into a public school. |

I think the vast majority of folks on here have a senese of humor. The OP, myself and I'm sure a number of lurkers didn't see the post as joking. Usually when someone is doing some harmless teasing or joking to someone they are respoding to for the first time a smiley face icon or j/k is accompanied to avoid misunderstandings.

To be entirely fair, though, anyone who has even glanced at a forum or any website dealing with EFL in Korea would know this was, if not actually funny, tongue in cheek. In a rare moment of agreement with Junior, I think some people around here need to unclench.
Unless of course we're talking about people whose pretensions (I'm sorry, whose tendencies toward pretentiousness) lead them to take pissy exception to a perfectly acceptable use of the word pretension and who then go on to fail at identifying the root of the word, among other silly failures.

Note to cyui: Had the OP wanted to retool his sentence to use an adjective (by no means a requirement), he probably - Ivy League graduate that he is - would have used unpretentious instead the very lame pretensionless. Just to help you parse this, a noun doesn't have to be a thing, except in the case that an idea or concept can be a thing, because here's the thing: The OP didn't want to assert that his having graduated from a good school (an implicit claim of merit) makes him better or more qualified than anyone else. Having pored over the Korean job boards for several years, though, I have seen a few schools pretentious enough to ask specifically for Ivy League graduates. (I've always thought the requirement to be a bit stupid, since these schools seem to pay no more than anyone else, but still, it seems that such a background does occasionally give one a leg up, at least insofar as knowing how to use a basic noun.)
P.P.P.S. Oh God, when I see things like this from people who teach English, I realize that 12-21-2012 can't come soon enough. "Comfort, O comfort ye, my people, it'll all be over soon." (Isaiah Chapter something, verse something or other - I paraphrase, of course.)

Fall is not a bad time to start. There is a major recruitment for public schools Apr-Jun with orientation and jobs starting in mid August.
Irregardless of how "prestigious" your school was, when you get off the plane you are just another "green as grass" newbie at the entry level of ESL.
Most schools don't care where you come from; they are only interested in your white face, American accent and the fact that you qualify for an E2 visa.
It is immigration who cares that you have a degree and they could care less if you graduated summa-cum-laude (hyphens to get around the swear filter) from Harvard or barely scraped a 2.0 GPA at Podunk-U.
Want to get a leg up (at least a bump in pay) get a 100 hour TESOL/TEFL cert before you apply.

I have a friend who is from Korea and she keeps telling me to go for a hagwon, but she probably has a different view than a teacher would. Either way, still need to do more research. As for TESOL, I wasn't aware that would help in Korea, so thanks! |

but..mmm, maybe Iam just being the 'tool" now? Don't you think?
And the only reason schools' ask for Ivy League Alumnis'is because some ( not all) of these Korean Parents are under the assumption that because someone went to one of these schools' then they will generally make a better teacher ( kind of like the blond haired-blue eyes theory).
Lesson in life for you though: Don't be a jealous hater because someone has more thinking capacity then yourself.Instead, try to learn from that person. You MIGHT be really surprised...just a though. |

Actually, the University you graduated from has very little impact on your employability unless your major is education related and you have experience.
Why is that?
Because you will be applying as a entry-level teacher since you have no in-country experience and likely no teaching experience (unless I am mistaken).
Your University may put you ahead if the employment decision comes down to you and another but that is about it.
Now if you have an Education/EFL-ESL related degree the game changes.
As for Hakwon vs Public School jobs, each have their advantages and disadvantages it is up to you to figure out what you prefer and where you feel you would be more confortable.

If you have no connections in Korea, your choices are the same:
1) Pepper every head hunter in town with your CV.
2) Contact the agencies used to place public school teachers.
While this process is in gear:
1) Start applying for your employment visa requirements (CBC, notarized diploma, transcripts...)
2) Look for other jobs in your major. You might not end up wanting to come here if you're not an education major and only have a BA.
If you have an Ivy degree, even if it's just a BA, you might be able to get better paying work in test prep. Pain in the arse job, but the coin can be good. Then again, after getting an Ivy degree, you'd be asking yourself, 'What the heck am I DOING?' |
