Please just play along.

A friend works in a Korean-based work environment here in Korea. This person is not a teacher and functions as a high level manager. Lately the "Kids" have been acting up. The most recent transgression was the open discussion of this manager's salary, which is likely 5x the salary of the others. Keep in mind that, at this time, there is nobody in Korea with the appropriate qualifications for this position.

What do you anticipate the rxn to be from the employees?

1. Increased respect, "Oooo-waaah, so much money!"
2. "That a-hole makes big bank, let's push them out!"
3. Other?

Most likely a wave of intense jealousy, crying about it, and then getting over it and going back to work.

Hopefully there is some level of getting over it. The manager is also in the middle of trying to explain that some cultures have different levels of pilfering from their employers and that submitting petrol receipts for your aunts car, when they rode the bus to work, is naughty. That should prove interesting.

That kind of crap is common. I know someone who charges his gas to the company and then drives his car here there and everywhere. on his day off or in the evening. I am sure that is not the spirit of what his boss was tryng to do.

If your friend is a foreigner and is not working for a large company (ie, if he's seen as getting special treatment only because he's a foreigner) then the possibility of #2 is extremely likely.

How would these people find out, anyways? If it's your friend's fault that they caught wind of his salary, then he has only himself to blame. There are almost no social situations where talking about salary is mandatory.

yeah, its a no-win situation there. As a foreigner who has power and more money (things Koreans really value, no?) thats 3 strikes against the Korean mentality of us vs whitey groupthink, etc. Ive never supported being too close at work, esp here. No matter if they speak English, generally, it will always be a us vs you mentality. Id rather be a strict but nice boss and have my own friends. that would be better than the typical Korean manager style of strict and asshole.

The person in HR or accounting could probably find out salaries of emloyees. It might have leaked out that way.
