I just saw on the news that it's the 25th anniversary of the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. I remember watching it live on tv when I was a kid and I was seriously scarred for life. I still get a sick feeling when I see replays of the launch and explosion on television and to this day I will not watch a shuttle launch. I was in elementary school at the time and I remember being fascinated with Christa McAuliffe who was going to be the first teacher in space. I was so sad that she had left behind two children and that they had probably been watching the launch. Of course, now I realize that all of the astronauts left behind families and that day was a terrible tragedy for everyone.

Here's to the crew of the Challenger and the more recent Columbia. I hope they are all at peace.

Sitting on my parents' bed watching it live on TV while playing with my brand new F-16 Transformer (still have it in my keepsake box at my parents' house) is my earliest memory. Not exactly a pleasant first memory, but it keeps my grounded I guess.

Rest in Peace. May we never forget you or anyone else who paid the ultimate price.

typo from my daughter sitting on my lap..."keeps me grounded" in thoughts of mortality and life is what I meant.
