All of this being able to hire whoever you want to work for you needs to stop now!! We must help this poor backwards country adopt the policy of Affirmative Action. They are clearly racists, every single one of them, and we must change that. By being born in the West, we were blessed with the power of right on our side, and with that power we must convert the world and save humanity.

Is she the exception or the rule? There are blacks and other non white working all over Seoul and Korea but is that proof Koreans don't have bias in their hiring practices.

If that's a poor, cheap attempt at name calling, you need to grow up.

If not, then it was stereotyping. Either way, it makes you look moronic.

Hehe...truth is Alabama is more progressive than people think. Cities like Birmingham and Montgomery that made headlines as being racist back in the '60s have or had black mayors. Both the major universities of that state have had a very active AA program for years.

To return to the OP - your Black friend has more in common with non Blacks in Korea than they think. Many people on these forums know about whites with great experience and achievements that should land them a job in Korea if it's about wanting quality teachers and experience.

However, those people are not getting jobs or having to hunt for a long time because they are:

1) Not American or Canadian; 2) In the mid 30s or older; 3) Not female; 4) Not tall or thin; 5) Too experienced for the liking of some hagwon employers who don't want a teacher who will see when correct practises are not being adhered to and will question their boss when exploitation rears its ugly head; 6) Too experienced for some public schools who want fresh teachers who likewise aren't going to challenge them when they do things that are not correct.

It's not just about prejudice against people of colour which does exist among employers and others.

To the OP: Your initial statement is not quite right.

I have 8 yrs in Korea and am white. Though I am hitting 40 and thus I have found it more difficult to get work than any other time.

I am now considering seriously ending my time here because it seems that there is a limit on working in Korea.

Though its not just related to race, there are other issues. Do you tick off all the points on their page?

Korea is not as you think it is?

(if you think I am an apologist, then reread some of my earlier posts)

Have I offended you? Good!

I take it you are a white man? Well, you know and I know that not that long ago - not ancient history - a black person in your part of the world would have got lynched just for trying to romance a white woman. Today it still isn't perfect - Affirmative Action is just a token attempt at catch up - it will never balance out because of people like you.

Just think of the 300 or so years that white people benefited from 'affirmative action' (in everything but name) in the Southern eastern parts of the United States - and you are complanining about this?

And the 'moronic' statement, I dare you to list your qualifications for teaching English! Wink Another one over here because his crappy liberal arts degree couldn't get him that sales job back home.

I had always heard there was all kinds of discrimination. I was shocked when she got the job. But good for her. Anyways, I know there is age discrimination too. I wonder when my number will be up. The public school always seems to ask if we are healthy. Wonder if that's code for not being fat? There are some older teachers and people of color in the semi rural province, but it seems mostly people who stayed and were hired before the recession hit. Most new hires seem to be early to mid 20's. Hopefully this recession ends soon so that it's not so competitive. The US is showing the beginnings of a turnaround. So, we'll see what things are like a year from now.

This. I know that most hagwon bosses are scumbags but even the decent ones sometimes have no choice as to whom they hire simply because the ajummas want their kid to be taught by a tall, slim, and young Caucasian. Case in point: one of the previous teachers at my hagwon was an overweight white girl. Parents actually called in and asked that their kids be switched to another class... Dead serious.

One of the women who worked at a school I was at in China once got a complaint from a parent, as she was too tall to teach English. To be fair, she was pretty tall.

It just doesn`t go down well with the natives not to fit their stereotype of an Australian, Canadian , or American, at least with regards to teaching. For example, the Japanese, they like their gaijins to be a gaijin. Same goes for the students in language schools in Taiwan and Korea.

All kinds of American Chinese, Korean, Indian or African Americans in places like Taiwan, Korea or Japan, face obstacles that the white EFL'ers will never have to deal with.

A guy I knew born in Canada of Chinese decent found it really hard to get a job teaching EFL in Taipei. There were lots of jobs out there but he didn't fit the Taiwanese stereotype of what a "Canadian" looked like. Then, when they found out he couldn't speak Chinese he felt he was judged negatively by the Taiwanese because of that.

Another African American instructor in Tokyo I worked with had the most disrequests than any other teacher at the school. When the manager asked the students why they didn't want his class again, they couldn't give any concrete reasons - just the feeling they had. The manager had to honor the students' requests for a white instructor. It happened so often over the course of this teacher's contract that the manager stopped telling the teacher that he'd been disrequested. There wasn't any substance to the disrequests; the students just wanted a white instructor.

In other schools I've worked at, students would only accept teachers who were British because they wanted to learn British English and acquire a British accent. It was ridiculous.

Being male, white, and English speaking brings unfair privileges that many other people in the world don't have access to simply because of their skin color or nationality.
