So I teach in a hagwon, and long story short I teach one kindergarten student by himself about an hour and a half each day (out of a 9-2 full-day kindergarten).

I need advice on how to engage him. He's a great student and when given the right activity really shines and impresses me with not only his English skills but his desire to learn. But, all the ESL games that i find for kindy require at least a handful of students.

Any help is appreciated. As for theme, it could be anything, although someone else teaches him phonics in the morning so for the most part I don't want to do that, i don't want him to get bored with it (although if you have a good idea for that, let's hear it.)

If you're teaching one kid, then I think you have a bigger things to worry about than how to keep him occupied, like "what am I going to do when my school goes bankrupt next month and I'm stranded in Korea"

not the answer i was looking for. Not helpful.

my hagwon has more than one student, it's a long story i didn't feel like explaining nor was it necessary.

1.5 hours - dude - that's tough with one.

Find some story books and practice reading. If you've got a K/E dictionary, you can help yourself by getting the K words before you read.


Otherwise, you'd better learn to dance...

Not necessarily. If the school has lots of teachers who are under their hours it makes sense to take a kid, even if it's only one, and hope to have more students join in the future.

Kids that age like to play "Who would win in a fight" you can get really silly with that and build on it. King kong vs. a whale. King kong vs. a whale, underwater. King kong vs. a whale underwater and king kong has one hand. After you get done with that, have him or her (yes, girls will play that too) draw it. After they draw it, you can have them label the different vocab if you want. You can practice writing, or whatever. Then, the next day, have them read it back to you.

Then, when you've finished you can tell your boss you had a lesson that hit all four parts of language: reading, writing, listening and speaking.

Hello, afp120!

Do you live within a day's travel time of Gwangju?
I'm off on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I can show you how to get started on a real good music program on either of those days.
A good music session could take about 30 of those 90 minutes.

Since I joined the forum, there have been 49 requests for help in teaching kindergarten.
I realize that your inquiry is somewhat different, since you are teaching only one child.
All the same, I hope that you will find some of these suggestions helpful:

Hope the kid likes songs! Find lots of fun kid's songs and chants in English, especially ones with "finger plays" or actions to go with them. Things like "We're going on a bear hunt" and "Miss Mary Mack" are good examples. We're using a lot of these in my kindy classes, and the kids love 'em. Some of them would work fine for one-on-one teaching. Smile

Instead of looking at teaching sites as much, try looking at sites that suggest activities for parents with single children. I don't have any links off hand, but Google should turn some things up for you. Those might help you get some more ideas. Best of luck!

I think we can all agree that it's a sign the school isn't at its financial ideal. I would be a little concerned, but not overly so if enrollment overall is going up or is staying stable. If enrollment is dropping at all, it's a big worry.

I've been at a school where I had one student in a class (though it was only 40 minutes). I was only at that school for 6 months. Luckily they gave me a flight back. A class with one kid is not a good sign.

Why not do some hands on activities that take some time? I know I'd start with cooking and art classes if I could. Reading and songs are good, too.

Maybe, but I had a situation before where we had a couple one student classes at my school, simply because we had thirteen teachers for thirteen kindergarten classes and only about five or six hours of elementary each. It's pretty normal to be under your teaching hours at a kindergarten. If you are under those hours, it makes sense for the school to have you teach whatever they can.
