|

There's a budget battle brewing between Seoul's Mayor and the city council and a number of programs aimed at assisting tourists may face the budget ax. There is a mention of the Seoul City Bus for Tourists. Does anyone who lives in Seoul know more about this subject?

The spat between Seoul City government and city council is likely to ruin the administrations efforts to promote local tourism, as many programs for foreigners have been downsized due to a budget shortage this year.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government last week announced this years cultural experience programs for foreigners, under which it is planning to receive 1,740 applicants for 30 events, a sharp drop from 2,591 in 2010 and 2,301 in 2009.
The Seoul Bus Tour, where participants on rented coaches are given the chance to look around the city, ride ferries, visit landmark buildings and other things, will be the first to be downsized. The number of concerts, performances and others will be dramatically reduced too.
Administration officials said the budget restraint was the major reason for the reduction of such programs.

I hope they don't get rid of the Seoul CIty Bus Tour, I enjoy taking it about once a month to act like a tourist, or when friends are in town. BTW, I wonder what they mean by "downsizing" it? Would they cancel it altogether or reduce they number of buses? |

i saw they were starting a daegu city tour in feb, and i thought..why?
it would be a shame if they cut this program in seoul, its basically one of the last hopes for Korean tourism, save the Japanese coming here taking advantage of the exchange rate and to eat cheap yakuniku, and chinese students working here
a walking tour where people would get prizes? what? you know it will be some cheap factory made crap with KOREA in big letters on it. yeah, thatll work. |

I don't know about the STO, but I've heard the KTO is closing some of their overseas offices this year, including the Chicago office; offices will be reduced to only one office per country. I think a budget cut is appropriate considering the amount they have wasted over the years creating inappropriate slogans and related paraphernalia, oodles of money spent on overstaffing, etc. |

Makes sense to me. Korea is the exact opposite of a tourist destination. It's a great place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit here. |

If you've ever ridden the Seoul City Tour Bus then you know that many Koreans ride it, too. Successful tourism is not just about attracting Europeans and Americans. There are plenty of tourists from Asia and even from other parts of Korea who come to visit Seoul. Yes, the Seoul Tourism office has wasted money on some stupid things but that office has also done some things well. It would be a shame to just eliminate everything because of stupid, petty political nonsense. This also goes for the member of the Seoul City council who want to allow political protests in tourist areas in Seoul. What would that accomplish other than the destruction of the tourism industry? |

she seemed a bit overwhelmed by the whole experience of living in seoul! |
