Been a fan of Gervais for about ten years now, loved this performance. His true personality is actually quite humble and modest, he's a controversial comedian- They knew exactly what they were going to get.

Contrary to the opinion to old and out of fashion, he's taking it all a step further. What he's doing is fresh to me.

And Brits aren't embarrassed. This is the entire point of what he does. Hence how he became so famous.

I think this is the defining feature of this kind of humor. It is a form of balancing the accounts, evening the odds, throwing a figurative pie in the face of a so-called "elite" member of society. For all intents and purposes, what with America's celebrity culture, they are viewed as a kind of royalty. The interpretation probably lies in how "insulting" is seen by some viewers and recipients. Some could argue that it is a comedian/clown/fools job to bring these pompous, self-satisfied, and self-absorbed performers back down to earth. And it is a job well-done. Not particularly unique, but a necessary antidote to the fetish-like adulation many of them have come to expect.

Tom Hanks remarked that RG should have been more kind. Why? Are these poor actors in some way feeble-minded or in need of special assistance? I took the comment as an indication of how sheltered these lives seem to be: gated communities, self-censorship, exclusive gatherings, etc.

Howard misses the mark. He makes it sound like the show was for the actors, which it of course was ostensibly, but the real crowd RG had to entertain was the audience. Sounds like Stern has become part of the establishment. Like I already said--not particularly funny, but it was memorable. And that to me makes it a success.

Howard Stern's job is to be an idiot, and he's made a ton of cash doing it. At any rate, I've never liked his schtick. Funny to hear that Bruce Willis walked out after he was Gervais referred to him as, "Ashton Kutche's Father!" aha!!!! And I'm also not a Ricky Gervais fan, but I don't think he was over the line at all. Hollywood is just pompous.

why do these celebrities have to be insulted?
they didn't go to the award show to be insulted.
that's not fair. one night where they shouldn't be harassed and teased is the award show , its a night to shine not be the butt of jokes.

how would you like it if you were at a dinner or event where you were up for an award of achievement and the host decides to introduce you in a mean way.. then add a LOL at the end of the introduction.
that's fine right?
it's all fun and games.
let's all call the fat girl in a class piggy..
it's just a joke. it's ok right?
the boy with glasses.. HEY 4 eyes.
get my drift.?

Ricky gervios humor belongs in the classroom
and I'm glad we ain't gonna see him host the gloves again.
pathetic..

most of them do it on the road, stand up.. when the person in question is not in the room so to speak.
not making fun of the guy with his wife and children in the audience.
have some class.

he could of been funny in another way if he could actually write funny jokes
problem is, he was just the funny kid in the class room making fun of others at school, so thats pretty much as far as his humor goes.
He will be washed up in a 10 years.

Read my post a few back. Your analogy isn't quite right. Calling the fat girl "piggy," isn't funny it's cruel. What is the difference? It's in how vulnerable the person is. Calling someone who has no choice in the matter "fatso," or "4 eyes," is bullying and lacks the virtue of irony. Gervais is preying on human weakness and in the knowledge that these celebrities had choices, but flopped. He is reminding the audience of human fallibility; that no person no matter how successful is outside these temptations and imperatives. This only touches on what is going on, but I'm not trying to write a thesis.

I'm from England and one of the things I often hear from other Brits here is how they miss the banter. Brits have a very knockabout sense of humour, which often borders on the offensive and seems very insulting to outsiders. However, many people fail to understand that there's a fine line between being witty and simply calling someone a *beep*.
