Although tensions have died down now, it's interesting to note the U.S. government's response to trapped citizens in the Middle East.

If and when the time comes to evacuate Korea, looks like Egypt shows us a glimpse of what could happen:

1. Government will charter flights out to nearby countries; likely to Japan or the Philippines.

2. Then you are on your own for housing and arranging a flight home.

3. Citizens have to pay for those chartered flights.

4. There will likely be massive waits at the airport. Egypt has just 2,400 U.S. citizens wanting to leave and there seems to be some significant delays getting them out.

Looks like all in all, if something happens with NK, you'll be pretty much on your own and can't depend on the government for much assistance. Therefore, the advice to head south and wait out any hostilities seems correct.

Good point.

Get your important stuff in a small bag and go immediately to the nearest GimBapCheonGuk and steal the delivery adjosshi's scooter! Then drive south.

Don't lose to much sleep about the theft of a Gimbapcheonguk scooter. Korea owes you much more than that after putting up with their micro-management for years. Smile

Before the US embassy took the evacuation plans off their website shortly after the latest attack, they had the country divided into several zones and US citizens were to gather at a designated "Evacuation Control Centers" in these zones.

As if there were any question that an evacuation would be costly and disorganized. If hostilities ever reached the point where an evacuation were even made public, the US would have too much on its plate to worry about efficiently and effectively getting its citizens out.

100% wrong. People who think like you are the reason evacuations and disasters turn deadly. The more people steal, the more people are focused on theft and looters and not evacuating people. Your mentality is what made New Orleans such a chaotic scene.

What did that ajosshi do to you? So if Koreans think "All Americans are GWBush like warmongers" that would make it okay for them to pillage your place and beat you to a pulp?

Folks this is what you do- There will probably be some sort of evacuation procedure and designated refugee centers. Proceed there calmly and cooperate with authorities and obey their directions.

The smoother everything goes, the more people can focus on other things like killing NK soldiers and stopping the war and helping women, children, and the elderly.

Keep cool and calm.

Sadly, I think Pigeon Fart was being fairly serious. Not to mention the fact that this line of thinking is rather common on the NK threads- people advocating for stealing, people recommending that you get your bug-out bag and head for the mountains, stuff like that. People need to remember that in these situations you should cooperate with authorities and keep a level head.

There's a great interview of former Newsweek bureau chief Loren Jenkins by Hunter Thompson (in Songs of the Doomed) where they discuss the American evacuation plan of Saigon - and why the plan couldn't possible hope to work.

For the most part, the hope would be that we would leave on regularly scheduled commercial flights (if there is enough advance notice). If North Korea manages to mobilize and strike without warning - all bets are off re: a "planned" evacuation. For example, in my old NEO package, it states that roads will come under military control and private vehicles will be barred from using them. They then tell you to report to your nearest evacuation center. I hope it's in walking distance.

Have you seen the Koreans line up at E-Mart? If you think you will be able to stroll up to the gate of any US base or designated evacuation center and just present your passport and walk through the gates - it will be nothing like that.

My evacuation plan is to grab my bug out bag and head south working my way to Japan. I don't ever see it coming to that but that is the plan as the Embassy is in Seoul and I don't see that area as being secure or safe so I will get out my own way.

Ok, trolls aside.....it will be interesting to see how much the US Government "bills" the people that are evacuated. Eventually the information is going to come out somewhere. My bet is $1000 a head or more just for the flight to Europe.

if most of the scooters have been jacked. i suggest we snag up the booze cruise boat on the han. i dont know how to start a boat but i think this might be a fast and effective way to get down to jeju. and korea owes us at least this much for the stifling regulations that have turned the vast amount of foreigners into slaves without sarcasm detectors.

A bargain for your life. Hopefully they accept Korean won. Every bank will have a run on it and the already toilet paper won will become NK style toilet paper.

America got it right. Charge people for evacuation. Canadian taxpayers are left paying for Lebanese to be evacuated everytime Israel attacks them. Then the 'Canadians of convenience' in Lebanon go back there after the fighting stops without paying a cent to Canada.

The Canadian Embassy here has always been clear that you will have to pay for evacuation (it is in the consular emergency handbook - or whatever they called it). The US takes us out to a safe haven (Japan or Guam - where they have bases) and we would be met by Canadian consular officials there. They would then arrange for us to fly home at our expense. If you don't have the cash, you will have to sign a promissory note to the Canadian government.

Yup. Let us not forget about all the little US citizens here, and their parents that would have to go with them. http://www.fileus.org/dept/citizenship/02-05-26-latimes-birth_tourism_asia.html
