I just received an e-mail from my recruiter stating that
"We heard from EPIK today regarding your position. They would like to recommend you to a National University High School in Gyeongnam. While they understand that Daegu and Gyeongbuk are your first and second choice, they would like to recommend you to this school in Jinju. Jinju is actually a very nice city located in the Gyeongnam province. When I was teaching in Busan, a lot of my students would visit Jinju on the weekends."
From the information I have read on the area, it seems to be very small with very little night life.
Does anyone know if there are many other Westerner teachers in this area, or any kind of "Ex-pat" community in the area.

| Considering that you chose Gyeongbuk as one of your choices, Jinju would be up your alley. Gyeongbuk is pretty rural, if Jinju were in Gyeongbuk it would be the 3rd largest city in Gyeongbuk. Jinju is an hour to 90 minutes away from Busan. |

Agreed. Jinju is much less out in the sticks than you very likely would have been if placed somewhere in Gyeongbuk.
TBH, given your first two choices, I think this is a reasonable attempt to accommodate you. Not where you want, but the very next province. If big city night life was really THAT important to you then you perhaps made a mistake with your preferences. You should have chosen Daegu and then another metropolitan city - say, Ulsan or Daejeon or Busan.
As has been said, Jinju isn't as remote as you could have been and it's also one of the nicer medium size Korean cities to live in. You could have done a lot, lot worse. |

Jinju is a nice small city. There is not much nightlife, but it's very live-able. When I lived in Namhae a few years ago, I knew some foreigners there. Not a huge expat community, but you won't be the only foreigner around.
However, the comment about "a lot" of Busan students flocking to Jinju on the weekends is pure BS. Many people go to Jinju for the annual lantern festival (which he/she may have been referring to), otherwise I can't see anyone going out of their way to go to Jinju. |

| I live in Jinju right now. As far as foreigners here there are some but not in large numbers. I've personally only seen a handful walking down the street. Nice clean city. |

Nice city...first city I visited outside of Seoul when I arrived....me and a girl were traveling there and ran into two sleezy as hell waegooks who keep trying to score my on my friend.....they suggested we get a motel room together and followed us for a bit.
Nice latern festival. |
