Anybody know of a cheaper way to get home than that $1000 flight?
I hear vague rumors of cheap travel by freight ship, and one of the guys who writes for the Road Junky site says he got across the oceans for free by working on them.
Anybody done that?
Do I have any real/cheaper options here? |

Bump. I'm also interested in this. From the very little research I've done, I found it was actually more expensive than flying (going by boat, that is). It's a romantic idea, though... hope someone can post something more useful. |

Buy an old sailboat. Fix it up. Sail it across the ocean. Sell it in LA for what you put into it. |

Doesn't John Madden refuse to fly and only travel by ship? |

I heard those rumors too - back in '96-99, they would say that

you can get a job washing dishes 3X a day for the crew. They also hire for deckhands and firemen, but you have to have certification for that. Korean shipping companies hire across all nationalities, so you'd be working a variety of other nationalities. |

You'll wish you'd paid that 1G for the 12 hour flight though, unless you bring some good reading material and booze. Wait, maybe they even have internet connectivity on the ships these days |
