I've worked in hogwans for 4 years and haven't had any problems, so there are good hogwons out there. If the school is so desperate to have sn American they should have started sooner, but a lot of people apply with the documents already prepared so they need to keep looking for that.

Look, I'm not saying there aren't great hagwons out there. I personally perfer working at a hagwon to working at a public school, a thousand times over.

But if you're worried you aren't going to get severance because you can't find the replacement you're being (unreasonably) pressured into getting, er - well. . .doesn't sound like a great hagwon to me.

Yeah, that's wrong. No chance you will get your severance, either.

I'm nearly certain they would pay my severance. The main thing is that I don't want to leave them without a teacher for a month since they think it will take 3 months to find a replacement. They would have started looking earlier if they had known about the new background check law. I've gotten a few pm's and it seems that it's not as difficult as I thought to find a replacement.

If they are as nice as you say they should give you your severance. Of course anything can happen but they've had to pay it before so they know the drill and I assume no prior teacher has been shorted their severence.

Before I left my great hogwan (and it was great), I got my boss a couple candidates well in advance for an orderly transsition and it worked.

Ultimately, its not your fault or issue if they can't find a replacement.

I would recommend 'reminding' your voice which bank account he can desposit your severence, offer to help in getting a new teacher with a reference or asking friends and restating that although it was a great experience you have other plans and thank them in advance for the severence which will be needed for your future plans.

I think they're either lying to you or using a terrible recruiter. Most recruiters won't even talk to you if you don't have your documents in hand. It's not like they have you sign a contract then have you go through the process of getting everything you need.

Looks like you may have found a replacement and you didn't even have to pay Dave a penny.

The new way to advertise!

How many foreign teachers have worked there before you? Are you willing to put applicants in touch with those former teachers? A current teacher will not always tell all the dirt on a school because they're afraid of not getting paid their severance/last salary/plane ticket/other if the school can't find a replacement before the end of the contract.

Since you're obviously advertising here, how about you give us the full info here.

Only Americans? Canadians have a similiar accent. As a poster said, there's plenty of Aussies around. If you want an American or Canadian, you might have to pay a little more to get them in a more rural setting. Think most of them folks will still get offers in Seoul and Gyeonngi-do. Sorry, don't mean to pick on the rest of you. Korea is not always fair to non white, non North Americans, but it is slowly changing. Hope your boss considers one of the other English speakers.

If you find them a new teacher, I hope that means that you get paid the recruiter's fee, OP, since you're DOING HIS JOB.

No offense, but "we need you to stay"?? I know this is typical thinking, but sheesh, if you are the most irreplaceable part of their business, then they are horrible business owners. But it sounds like they (and the recruiter) are probably benevolent enough, albeit extremely lazy and unable to plan in advance.

You should tell them, "Oh, I'm going to need you to double my salary and pay me weekly starting at the end of my contract date." I guarantee they will find someone else pronto.

I don't know, maybe it's just me...I just find a lot of aspects of Korean culture so damn codependent and whiny and it drives me nuts.
