It has fairly modern cultural roots. Older generation Koreans have a nostalgic association with Spam due to its introduction by the US Army during the meat-scarce war & postwar years. Budae jjigae is another throwback to that time. Hormel must love Korea.
If you eat an occasional hotdog, your food snobbishness is hypocritical. Similar slaughterhouse crud. |

| Spam, if infrequent eaten, is quite good. Nothing wrong with the product. Good source of protien. Elitist, or, "just so above it all" attitudes aren't nessary when it comes to Spam. |

A few years ago my parents ordered a big package of SPAM with SPAM paraphernalia from the company's website.
My parents aren't Korean and I doubt the few months my dad spent in Korea in '79 influenced their purchase. They are just strange people. |

coming from an Italian heritage, i take my food pretty seriously.
wen i was growing up, my mom and grandmother refused to even acknowledge that stores sell Kraft Dinner, never mind actually buying it.
if i gave a spam gift-set to someone in my family im pretty sure they'd disown me.
id be offended if someone gave me a spam gift-set too. unless the person didnt know any better--or if they were korean. |

I don't know, man. Some people are really bad at selecting a gift to give, but I think it's an awfully big stretch to be offended when somebody was trying to do something nice for you. |

well yea, if someone had good intentions then obviously i wouldnt be upset. but as i said before, if someone gave me that, especially if they spent 100$ on it, they dont know any better... |

Agreed. I think there's just something intrinsically offensive about a $100 can of meatish food product that wasn't even grass-fed |

Hormel's competition included lips, snouts, even ears in their meats but Hormel refused to use these refuse parts. Instead, he used the shoulder of the pig (a cut of meat rarely used because of its time-consuming removal from the bone). Hormel's meat was superior and more expensive than the competition's, but once opened it was indistinguishable.
The primary ingredient in Spam is chopped pork shoulder meat mixed with ham. About 90% of Spam is pork from a pig's shoulders. The remaining 10% (or so) comes from the pig's buttock and thigh, better known as ham. This ratio varies according to ham and pork prices. The U.S. Department of Agriculture does not permit any nonmeat fillers in lunchmeat, nor does it allow pig snouts, lips, or ears. The second ingredient is salt, added for flavor and for use as a preservative. Also, a small amount of water is used to bind all ingredients together. Sugar is also included for flavor. Finally, sodium nitrate is added to prevent botulism and acts as a preservative as well. It is the sodium nitrite that gives Spam its bright pink color�without it, Spam would discolor and become brown.
