I have a great rucksack with day pack attachment. I plan to use this for travel in general. Hoever for the big move to SK I will bring more. I have a a regular backpack filled with electronics and I have squeezed my essential books into another. I was planning to check in one of those large rolling suitcases. Likely I will put the book backpack inside the suitcase and carry on the rucksack and electronic backpack. Can I pack a box for check in as well if needed?

Is it true you get one carry one bag and one laptop bag which can be stored under the seat as well as two bags which can be checked in which are under 70 lbs? I do not mind paying if necessary. On international flights is it 2 bags? free? under 70?

Thanks

It depends on where you are coming from, what if any connecting flights you have and what carrier you are using.

MOST (but not all) flights from North America (direct (not necessarily non-stop)) to SoKo allow 2 bags of 23kg each. They also allow allow 1 carry-on PLUS your laptop and purse/camera bag.

If you are coming from anywhere else you will be limited to 2 bags with a combined total weight of 20kg PLUS 1 carry-on and your laptop.

If you know the address of your school you can mail a big box or two with some stuff ahead of time. I'd only do this with a public school but it could save you money and aggravation.

Check with the airline you are flying on. As suggested by another poster you can send some non essentials ahead to the address of the school. If its things that's not needed right away I'd recommend sending it by the cheapest means possible.

It's actually really expensive to ship boxes over to Korea. However, you are allowed to bring 2 50lb bags from America (if that is where you are coming from). On Korean Air you were allowed to check a 3rd bag that could be up to 70lbs for $130, which is much cheaper than shipping a box of that size to Korea. Plus, I brought a roll bag and backpack as my carry ons. So I basically had a lot of crap with me. So check with your airline and good luck!

Shipping from the U.S. to S. Korea is ridiculously expensive if you use the post office. However, my folks use a small private freight company that only charges around $60 for a big parcel from the U.S. to Korea.

Shop around.
