I don't. Officially, the Republic of Korea holds sovereignty over the entire Korean peninsula. |
No it doesn't. It CLAIMS sovereignty, just as the DPRK does. |
Right, but my point still stands. |

Has anyone ever been greatly annoyed by this question before?
The first few times it seems innocent enough but when you start hearing it from people who should know better, it starts to get really annoying. |
They're just asking to show how smart they are
That there are two of them! |

I was quite surprised I was asked once or twice 'Is South Korea the one with the dictator?'. It seemed incredibly ignorant considering the World Cup was only 8 years ago |
It is ignorant, but isn't it also ignorant to assume that everyone follows sports? |
The World Cup is a massive deal everywhere outside North America |

It's ignorant to assume a bunch of English speakers aren't from North America. |

The last real spectacle from South Korea that North Americans still remember was the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Since then, not a whole lot has happened in Korea that has really caught people's attention.
I wonder if Korea will win the Olympic bid again in the next decade... |

If you're talking to Americans, then ask them if they're from NORTH or SOUTH America. Try not to laugh as they screw up their face at the question and then tell them that your question is just as ridiculous as their NOrth/South Korea one. |
