Anyone made a mistake chasing a girl to Korea for love

Lets see now.

*Friend of mine met K-girl in Oz. She was super cool and down-to-earth. They dated for 6 months then he followed her back to Korea. After several months, her parents found out about him and did not like their daughter being with a foreigner, so she was forced to dump him. I was kinda surprised that she obeyed their wishes, because she had always been so individualistic when in Oz.

* Acquintance spent 3 years in a relationship with K-woman- helping fund her travels around the world and being with her in the US. Finally she returned to Korea. The plan was for him to follow her back to get married in Korea when his job ended, which he did. 3 months later he arrived at Incheon airport. The first text message he got was from her to tell him she was going to marry a Korean guy.

However, there are also plenty of success stories as well, and the old-fashioned prejudice against outsiders is breaking down to an extent.

If you can take it or leave it, then my rule is generally to leave it. However if you are really into this girl, then absolutely, give it a try and see what happens.

lol oh man I feel sorry for your acquaintance. What happened afterward? Did he break down in front of a lot of people?

I'm told via a second party that he "went a little bit nuts", although I didn't get the details. Apparently he stayed on in Korea because he'd already given up his job back home, and had a job organised here.

The problem is not Koreans, I should add. Its the same anywhere: if you gamble too much too soon with an unfamiliar culture or person, you can come unstuck.

I am having second thoughts :S

There's no need to listen to any of us (though there are plenty of good comments here).

Your actions will reveal your decision. And your decision will reveal what is important to you.

There's no need to think too hard on this. There's no wrong decision.

My two cents:

If you can come to Korea for a year or two, without wrecking your career back home go for it, unless you harbor some secret desire to join the winners circle populated by long-term ESL teachers... an elite group it truly is...

That's the big issue.

Also, do NOT agree to marry the girl in Australia!!!!

Wait till you get to Korea and you get to see the other K-girls first.

You may find a better one here.

Or you may realize you don't want to marry a K-girl, after you get out and travel a bit.

Brutally honest: with the way you write on here and your aforementioned hesitation, you shouldn't teach English.

Thanks for the advice. I have decided to go but this trip won't just be for her as being in the field I am in Seoul would be an interesting city to observe and also study. I am going to take up a teaching job and complete a Course a contact asked me to do to get further in my career and I found out I can do it through Correspondence. So I will not wreck my career if I go for 1 year. I have a great reference through clients I have met to other jobs. I won't be coming back to my current job so that is a bonus haha

Though as for the gf it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Finding jobs in Seoul isn't exactly the easiest thing in the world, particularly for inexperienced males. Just a word of warning.

I have heard looking presentable with good qualifications and a job back home, attractive, fit and young helps heaps, I also did a TESOL certificate.

Though anywhere where it is possible to commute to will be enough for me.

Finding something close is easy, but finding something in Seoul isn't, I would say. I fit the ideal type mentioned above (and I'm North American), but was told by recruiters when I was first applying that Seoul wouldn't be too easy. The folks I know who lack qualifications and really wanted Seoul typically waited a long time for something decent to pan out for them. By no means am I saying that it's impossible, but if your goal is to get a job in a timely fashion - and I would assume it is, given that you already gave notice at your workplace - you'd likely be better off shooting for a job in one of the satellite cities such as Bundang, Ilsan, or Anyang, depending on where your girlfriend lives.

All this time I thought you were like 35. I'd say stick with your job, you're young and you'll find another girl.

23? Yikes!

I met my k girl 6 years ago in Taiwan, dated for a year, 4 were long distance, and i've been here for a year. It worked cause we established roots the first year we dated. I kinda skimmed through the thread, how long have you been with her?

I was given the same advice that valmer said when I was younger. It's good advice man. If your career situation can survive you being in Korea, I'd say do it. But, if things go south with the gf, then have a backup plan. Go to hongdae and find another hottie to fall in love with. Don't keep thinking she's the 'one,' this world is full of many 'one's'

Don't live out a Korean drama.

Come for love and fun. If love doesn't work, hang on to fun. Tada!

Buddy - if you love this girl then just go and join her. No regrets or 'what ifs' will be had by doing something about it.
