Another IKEA expose on Swedish television this week. Theyve discovered that IKEA tries to avoid taxes. No kidding. Every corporation in the world tries to avoid taxes. The story also notes the fact that the stores are designed to confuse shoppers and keep them trapped in the store. Wow!!! These journalists are sharp. The longer someone stays in a store, the more money they are likely to spend. What do they think the kids ball room and the restaurant were there for? The funniest part of the article is the rehashing of Ingvar Kamprad being a Nazi. I was there in 1993 when the info was revealed. The funniest part of Ingvar being a Nazi was that he joined the Swedish Nazi Party in 1945, AFTER EVERYONE KNEW THAT THE NAZIS HAD MURDERED 6 MILLION JEWS. His excuse was that it was a youthful indiscretion. He was 20 years old in 1945 and remained in the Party until the early 1950s. |

My boss, Mike, was the CFO. I worked under 4 CEOs in my 14 years at IKEA. The first was Bjorn, Ingvars nephew. He was a drunk. But, he was a likeable drunk. |

I've never shopped IKEA, and I most likely shouldn't have started this thread, but here it is. Let's just roll with it, okay?
Somebody chime in with an IKEA experience for me. |

When IKEA first opened a store in my hometown in the late 70s, I remember thinking they seemed pretty cool(even though I was someone with no interest in furniture). They had a big room full of plastic balls for kids to roll around in, which at the time seemed pretty innovative.
Despite their tax-dodging, post-45 Nazi underside, I think their public image has coasted somewhat on the general aura of progressiveness that accrues to Sweden. |

Most of my furniture is from Ikea. I did not buy most of my furniture (a friend "donated" it to me when she moved back to CA). My current gf has the exact same Ikea dresser as me (that's how I knew we were soul mates). Next time I have to furnish a place, I will try to avoid the place. Why? It's not the best quality and I'm just getting weary of its styles and designs since everyone in the States between the ages of 20 and 35 has at least a couple Ikea items.
Ramble over. |

Thanks folks, I feel much better about this thread now and I just won $200 clams on the 1st quarter's Super Bowl score - I had the Pitt 0/GB 4 box. This is nice because I need a haircut and some new kicks.
Pitt's got a field goal, and they're driving for another score with the half winding down. A touchdown and 10 to 14 means another contribution to the Caniff Fund! C'mon!!
Edit: Scratch that - GB interception.
Anyway, back on topic I found more angst against IKEA (this is becoming an eye-opening pursuit):

i have an ikea story for ya...
so my girlfriend buys me a hopen (six drawer cabinet) from the aforementioned place of suckery. builds it for me as a christmas present. does a good job. no pieces missing and everything SEEMS sturdy. about three weeks later after barely loading the thing with nothing but socks and t-shirts the doors start to stick. then they just plain wont open. seems the crappy particle board wood is cracking and cant hold the screws in. so i call ikea up. they inform me that they have a replacement side panel. im in california so we have like 3 nearby. nearby being at least an hour and thirty minute drive. get in the car. load piece of crap hopen in the back. drive to "closest" ikea and then begin to wait. and wait. and wait. at least 40 minutes of respectful asking for service later do i finally get "served". and by served i mean ive gotten better help from people beating me up. apparently the guy i spoke to on the phone was on an extended meatball break and when he finally got done the part i had driven all that way for was given to somebody else. so of course im pissed off but dont want to burn any bridges. i respectfully leave after giving them my name and number and getting their full assurance that once the part i need comes in i will be called. 3 hours on the freeway. 1 hour at the store. keep these numbers handy we'll be adding them up later.
two weeks go by without a word so i finally decide to call them back. after waiting on hold for a 30 mins i am directed to voicemail. leave my message. over the course of the next two weeks i leave 5 more. usually only after having to wait through 20 minutes of automated diretories and empty promises that the person im looking for will be with me shortly. finally after three weeks of this crap i get ahold of the guy and low and behold they had my piece for a while but couldnt get in touch with me. yeah uh huh. i ask to speak to a manager. no luck must be eating meatballs. but before i give up hope....... |

Jesus Christ. I'm trying to avoid mention of the game so I can watch it at a friends later. Why would you go into an ikea thread of all places to talk about it? |

Because I started it?
Still, sorry about that. I won't say another word about the game. |

There is a cool IKEA store in Guangzhou, China that I have bought a lot of stuff from. I do have to say that it is ^%*&ing annoying the way they have designed the store as a 3 story maze. If I want to get something small like a picture frame (on the 1st floor) it takes me about 20 minutes to get from the beginning (3rd floor-furniture) through the swarms of Chinese consumers to the picture frame section.
So I can sympathize with the writer's complaints in this area! |

It seems that Ikea is making enemies in Virginia.
