We didn't study Korean from Kindergarten onwards. Most of us didn't even know what written Korean looked like until we landed here. They, on the other hand, have studied English for their entire lives...

Right, and the English education that they received was probably top-notch.
By the way, there's a very good chance they didn't study English in kindergarten. Most Koreans I talk to say that English kindergarten is a very new thing.
Anyways, lots of us studied a second language in high school, and a fair number of us spoke it fairly well at the time. However, lots of those people would probably struggle if asked to speak the language today. |

| Funny how history repeats itself. Ten years ago it would have been Japanese girls, all the rage. Now it's Korean girls all over again, but with less screaming. |

I had the misfortune of watching a live "benefit" show with kids from 3rd world nations (not all of which spoke English). They took the kids from their homes and asked them really difficult questions (speaking too fast/mumbling in English) to which one boy in a wheelchair only answered "Yes". If you ask a poor Bolivian boy a question in English, you should probably know he can't respond properly
By the way, how many public high schools in one of the English speaking (or any) coutries learn Korean? |

I'm sure a lot of us would be hilarious if some camera crew came up to us and started speaking in Korean.
It was less funny when the Korean crew hit the streets of America and asked in their simple english "Have you heard of bibimbap?" |

I was under the impression that pretty much every American from the coasts knows what Bibimbap and kimchi are. |

I was under the impression that pretty much every American from the coasts knows what Bibimbap and kimchi are. |
this was in new york city i think, so apparently not. or maybe considering the strange context, with a korean guy stumbling over english words and then saying "bibimbap" in perfect korean threw them off and they said no automatically.

Could be. Many restaurants advertise it as "Korean spicy mixed vegetables with egg" or some such nonsense too.
Korean food is getting bigger in the West. It further fuels my belief that Korea is going to be the next Japan in terms of popularity, except Korean popularity is going to ride on music instead of cartoons. |

music? well, i'd hope not.
it's working in SE Asia, but their music was pretty bad to begin with. I suppose Korean music is an upgrade for them. Among the genres I'm interested in, there are no well known Korean acts in America, but plenty of them from Japan. Gauze, Mute Beat, etc.
food is food and tends to come in fads. remember tapas? sushi? still around, but the craze is over. there might be a minor korean food fad going on now. maybe it'll get around thai-level popularity. |

You were sadly mistaken. I work at a U.S. (west coast) office of a Korean company and some of the American employees have never tried Korean food and have no idea what kimchi or bibimbap is. There's one (obese) lady who flat out refuses to try any Asian food besides teriyaki chicken. She's been working there, under various Korean supervisors and managers, for ten years. |
