I know a Korean born professor in the US. I suspect it might be difficult to secure a position with a Korean Ph.D. though (the one I know has a U.S. Ph.D.)

There are tenure track foreign faculty at the university I work at. Tenure does take a rather long time here and it is not surprising none are tenured yet. Not sure whether that will ever happen. In general U.S. universities have a much more diverse faculty than Korean universities do.

True and by the way, most Korean Professors who work in the US or Canada are guest lecturers, assistant professors or on an exchange program.

That settles this silly little tirade by the OP.

I found an exception to the rule. Postech has made the move to hire and offer more competitive salaries to Non Korean Professors. They also have moved up to #28 in Higher Ed ranking system for top universities. Maybe as more universities recognize how Postech is advancing itself by offering comparable salaries there will be this kind of change after all.

Quote:

More-Competitive Promotions

His team also overhauled the university's hiring system in March, shortening the time it takes associate professors to reach full tenure from 13 years to seven years. The aim is a more-competitive system modeled on the best American colleges, where "five or six out of eight professors" get tenure, he says.

"As long as we hire elite professors and allow them to excel, we will succeed," says Mr. Baik. "We hire our professors regardless of nationality or origin, and give them the support they would have at Harvard or Stanford."

Building a competitive market for academic hires in a country as small as South Korea will not be easy, however, so the university has begun looking further afield. The president has set a goal of raising the proportion of full-time foreign faculty members to 25 percent by next year, up from 18 percent.

Although it may be true that on one hand there is a certain, if you wish, je ne sais quoi, that albeit towards the opposite direction in the sense that one might not actually give into similar situations that could arise and that on the other hand if one were to express such feelings, it is clearly a matter of culture be it here or else where to the degree that it is not only true but also 100% untrue; thus, we should update this situation at the global level.

Although I agree 100% with all that you said, I do believe that you need to go deeper into this situation. If one were to take, for example, the same position as you do and not take into consideration multiple other factors to which one must firmly stand by in the research and do so at both ends. For example, in order to clarify this in order that it will be more clear, not just to you and the other readers, but also to myself, as it is quite important when posting to make sure that anyone and everyone will clearly understand the information if it is clarified because clarification is the most important fact of all. That said, I hope that I have been of some help in clarifying this problem and that I did it in a clear way in order for you to clearly see my clarification.

Post of the year.

And, I made that choice before I saw the post time was 11:11. I have a student from El Salvador who is Mayan (there are 26 Mayans at my university and I know them all) and he has 11:11 phenomena. The last 4 numbers of his student ID is 4004. So, we call him the death angel. (사 천사) 12/21/2012 at 11:11 Universal time (8:11 PM in Korea) he is going to take us all to heaven.
Very Happy

PS: I am editing. It now says it was posted at 3:11. Shocked Maybe it was the 11 from the year and the 11 from the time. My eyes are very bad today. Crying or Very sad In any case I just noticed my post time was 11:44 Shocked Laughing More editing. I see becasue of the year I have for posting 111144. Laughing Laughing Laughing

I just got promoted to Assistant Professor becasue for the past year my student evaluations have been A+. So, I decided to have some fun again here and be a bit "Crazy".
