Watched it this afternoon...a bit long and dry for 2 hours 40 min.
Part 1- human development/behavior- meh, a bit boring
Part 2- Market Economy/Currency- AMAZING. Really everyone in the world should see this to understand how the system works that pretty much encompasses and controls our lives.
Part 3- Their solutions/utopian hopes- some good ideas, but overall completely impractical and will NEVER happen.
I think part 2 tells why our current global economic system will not and cannot continue indefinitely no matter how much tinkering is done and no matter how much the powers that be want it to continue for their own benefit. They do a good job in showing that unfettered greed IS self-destructive, and we will have to pay the piper eventually. As the end shows, there will be a rising up of the poor at a certain point as more and more are marginalized, but it won't be peaceful, IMO. As well, there is no paradigm in place to replace a faulty system, (and their pie-in-the-sky plan will never happen) so you will just see new people in power exploiting others again and again.
Eye-opening and depressing. Maybe better to be one of the ignorant masses enjoying comfort now and believing it will continue on forever. |

I agree with everything you've said.
Part One - Human Nature, drags on a bit. That said, it makes a lot of interesting points about how neglected and abused babies become damaged people who often turn to crime. I've heard Gabor Mate, one of the psychologists in this film speak before and I can say he's super interesting. I like the connection he makes with stressful environments and high cancer rates, addictions and crime. The idea that the Wall Street tycoons are mentally ill because they show no remorse for robbing people blind is interesting.
Part Two is a great analysis of where we are economically and where we're going. You can't have an infinitely growing economy with infinite resources.
Part Three - I agree that the calls for action will not be productive. The film makes that point saying something to the effect "Imagine if we had another Earth and could start all over again. What kind of world would we build?" And it's there they recommend the circle cities.
But the film does paint this as an impossible hypothetical situation (since we have only this Earth). Protests and going green may buy us some time, but that's probably all we can do at this point.
I love the start of the film with the Monopoly lesson and the animated sequence with the old men. These two scenes were well executed. |
