I have about 36 hours to decide whether or not to take a plane straight to South Korea or go back to the states and begin to look for work in Korea there. I guess my question is how successful one might be this time of year and how difficult it would be to find lodging/work with no Korean language skills.
I do have a University Degree in Linguistics and a TEFL certification so I am qualified. The question is whether to take it slow or dive in head first.

Go home.
Chances are (approaching 100%) that you won't get a uni job this late in the season unless you already have connections here (leaving your only option as an E2 candidate)
and
you will need documents from home that you are unlikely to have with you now. (E2 applications require an FBI background check with an apostille AND you need a copy of your degree (also with an apostille).
You can try for a fall (mid term break) uni position, wait till next December or take a job as an ESL teacher (public school or language academy) while you wait.

Do you have all your documents? It just depends'..also know,that it may
cost you more in the long-run;as you may have to pay your way back.
(Employers can find plenty of people already located in Korea). Cutting as many corners as legally allowable seems' to be more the trend nowadays'.
If they don't have to;then they generally won't. Take that into account. |

related: I didn't want to start a new topic, but will If it helps.
I have apostilled criminal background check, degeree & transcript, and want to come over to Korea ASAP.
I want to come to Korea for martial arts (already organised with instructor in dongdaemun-gu) as well as teaching English. I have somewhere to stay as well.
Should I book a flight, then once I'm settled in, try to find a job?
My school will pay for a Visa run to Japan, right? |

A visa run to Japan may not be an option if you haven't taught here. Guam is an option if you're American. If you're not American it's awfully risky. |

I'm Australian.
I've never taught before, but have been offered work in areas of Seoul in gangdonggu and mokdong. My martial arts school and accomodation arrangements are in dongdaemun-gu.
I wanted to just fly over and wing it and try to find a job close to there.
Is it a terrible idea? |

My understanding is that you're technically not supposed to go to Japan to get a visa for the first time. A lot of recruiters aren't going to want to deal with you if you require any extra paperwork, and what I was told is that while you can go to Japan for your first one, it requires utilizing a loophole, which essentially means that most recruiters won't even respond to your emails. As an American I had the Guam option available and utilized it, but even then a lot of recruiters weren't thrilled about dealing with me.
I'm not sure that having accommodations set up already really helps you. A lot of schools already have apartments under contract, which means they're not going to be thrilled to sign someone who wants a housing allowance in place of that apartment.
I would recommend waiting until you've got something solid. |

Mokdong and Gangdong are both very far from Dongdaemun. Long subway commutes will significantly reduce your quality of life here. There are lots of schools in the Jongno area, which is much closer to Dongdaemun. |

Recently, some of my friends were having better luck finding a job while back home. Schools want "new" teachers that they can con easily. Good luck. |
