My boss asked my boyfriend (a former employee who is no longer working at our school) to hand out fliers for the school. He's currently on a tourist visa and isn't working, so he is interested in spending a few hours doing this just to help out. My boss wants to pay him, but I'm fairly sure that would count as working illegally.
My question is thus: if he chooses to do it for free, can he get into any trouble re: his visa status? I don't trust my boss, so I would not be surprised if he's trying to get my bf into some sort of precarious legal situation. |

If you don't trust him, why does your boyfriend want to help him? Why don't you communicate your reservations to your boyfriend? |

I have. Without getting into details of our relationship, let me just say that he is extremely optimistic and trusting and says that there's no concrete reason he shouldn't trust this guy. He's only goign to listen if there's a potential legal ramification. |

Well, it looks like work, and it'd be hard to prove that he isn't getting paid. |

If it was something else I would say risk it, it is up to your boyfriend if he takes money. But his handing out fliers will increase the risk of being questioned (slim but increased). In the end it quacks, it would sound illegal. |

Is it illegal = yes.
Would your boss do something to turn him in = NO (the boss would be in more trouble than your B/F).
Is there a chance he would be caught = Not "0" but very close to it.
What would the consequences be = probably a few hours in an immigration detention center for questioning then released with a warning not to do it again. Kimmi is NOT some secret police trying to pounce on every foreigner to deport them as fast as they can but they are an arm of the ministry of justice and as such they are mandated to uphold the law when they observe a violation.
