3. South Korea (And I'm not just saying it because I live here, believe it or not it rocks)

Here's Korea's with English lyrics if you've never heard it--you probably have after local programs go off the air...)

South Korea's is amazing. It's definitely one of my favourites.

I like my own country's - Amhrn na bhFiann - because I've heard it so often I think. Also, agreeing with everyone else about the Marseillaise.

And I like South Africa's too, mostly because of the mix of different languages.

1. Dixie- If there is ever a national anthem that seemed to capture the spirit of a people for better and for worse....
2. La Marseillaise, but that may be just because I love Casablanca
3. Deutschlandlied- When your anthem is written by Haydn, you make the top 5
4. God Save the Queen
5. Russian National Anthem

Austria's is very good, but lacks a certain something, Switzerland's too, still both are Top 10 worthy.

Another poster mentioned Israel's haunting national anthem and I agree, very beautiful and stirring.

Star Spangled Banner comes across as more of a drinking song, which it was. Battle Hymn of the Republic would have been decent, but its a bit religious (not that this makes it bad, but that makes it hard to be a national anthem). My Country Tis of Thee is certainly another one. The Jacqueline Schwab rendition in 'The Civil War' by Ken Burns was very simple, yet probably the best version of it I've heard.

O Canada isn't bad, but not top 5.

Korea's is certainly the best of East Asia IMHO. Arirang as the anthem of United Korea would probably be one of the most haunting national anthems, very beautiful though.

Speaking of Korea and national anthems here's a song by Shin Jung Hyun (considered the greatest Korean rock musician ever). Shin was asked to write an anthem praising the Blue House and dictator Park Chung Hee. Instead he wrote this song- The Beautiful Rivers and Mountains as his own sort of national anthem. He got thrown in jail for a year shortly thereafter. Came out a little worn. Knowing the back story really gives the song a sense of urgency.

That's the absolute worst. I f'in hate that song.

I do agree about the Italian one tho. Sums up the country.

Your opinion is of a much lower value than mine Laughing

I love that song, it has brought tears to my eyes on many occasions. It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and my spine tingle.

1. Soviet Union / Russia (powerful)
2. France (exciting)
3. Israel (sad and haunting)
4. God Save the Queen (dignified....until Billy Connelly took the mickey out of it for being so god-damned slow)

About the Israeli national anthem. Solemn as it is, it's basically 'Baa Baa Black Sheep"in the key of ''? Confused

Can I vote for Australia's as the worst?? I'd be more likely to stand for "Highway to Hell", "Waltzing Matilda" or even "Do you f**k on first dates?". Or "Puff the Magic Dragon" by the Seekers.
