I agree with Kurtz.
We get called racist and some of us are a bit but the reality is that immigrants to Australia (of which make up about 25% of the population) get a far better deal in a practical sense than what they get from other countries. Once you jump through the immigration hoops (which discriminates based on $$$ not race) then your considered one of us and it's free health care, education and welfare for all 
Other countries that point the finger at us may put on a nice face but the reality of trying to live in their country speaks for itself. |

Australia is the most racist place I've been in the Western world. I've previously spent a year or (many) more in England, Scotland, the US, Korea and Australia.
Aussies call it how they see it a lot more than any other Western nation. And if they're racist, goddamn you'll know it. (At the same time, the refreshing open honesty has many positive sides.)
Koreans can be pretty out there as well. But it's usually middle aged men rather than young folk and the whole rest of the nation unlike Australia, where it's a huge chunk of the white population.
OP: I dare you to date an Aboriginal chick and take her to a pub. I bet the response is even more extreme than with the Chinese friends.

Sorry you had a bad experience; maybe you can explain to me why there are tens of thousands (or hundreds of thousands) of Chinese, Indians, Vietnamese, Koreans, Japanese, Fillipinos already living and flourishing there, or lining up with their permanent resident visas wanting a piece of the place if it's as bad as you say it is. |

If say the Japanese took over Australia I bet one of the first things they would do is discourage Asian immigration other than from Japan unless it's to work in low level jobs. Japan and Korea aren't exactly operating open door immigration policies.
But we are the racists.... |

| Every white Australian I've ever talked about the issue with has claimed that Australia has very little racism and been extremely offended by the though of any racism in the country. Every non-white Australian I know, as well as non-whites who have visited the country, have all claimed it to be extremely racist. |

My white Australian friend, who had a Korean wife, told me candidly that outside of their communities in Melbourne and Sydney, "Asians are basically not considered welcome in Australia" |

"Asians are not welcome outside Sydney and Melbourne" is a pretty big exaggeration, whether it came from a white Australian or not. Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin all have large Asian populations, and lots of country towns have large Asian populations too, working in various industries, eg. Young in NSW.
Having said that, the older generations can be quite racist, and in the country there is a lot of discrimination against Aboriginals.
The cities I mentioned above though are so multicultural (think LA, SF, Vancouver) that it's not really possible to be anti-Asian. You wouldn't have any friends or colleagues, unless you live in a nursing home.
Also, Pauline Hanson is long gone - she tapped into a bit of Anti-Asian sentiment back in the early to mid 90s, but had fizzled out by the turn of the Millenium.
You rarely hear any anti-Asian comments these days, as the bigots have decided that Asians are okay, and that Muslims (and therefore anyone from the Middle East) are the problem. Sad, but hopefully that too will pass. |

Its hard to imagine any Korean-ruled country being a bastion of racial equality.
The current redneck whitey culture of australia is pretty bad but an asian regime would be about 10X worse. |

Some funny stuff in this thread for sure!
I think that what a lot of people (cough cough Americans/Canadians) don't seem to get, is that although we *may* sound racist in the southern hemisphere (Sif Africa, New Zealand, Oz), it's not usually so. It's the way we talk, we rib each other all the time, and yeah, we use the 'bad' words when it comes to race or ethnicity a lot, it doesn't mean that we are being nasty, we're just not as hung up on those things as our North American brethren are.
Perhaps the world revolves differently in other parts of the world, or perhaps it doesn't always revolve around North America? Who knows, and more importantly, who cares? I sure don't, I care whether or not I have a cold beer in my hand and good food on my plate. |

There definitely are racists in Australia and I wouldn�t deny that. If you�re in places like a large pub you will encounter them.
The thing that annoys me about this thread is it then makes the leap that Australia is a racist country. Australia is not a homogenous society. You can�t take one person and think all Australian�s are like him. |
