Anyone know a story about someone that got deported for a bad or no reason?

What happens during the deportation process? Do you pay for it?

I know a guy who (kind of) got deported for working without a visa.

Basically, some officials paid his school a visit, and caught him teaching a class. He was taken to the nearest Immigration office, and was given a fine of about 1 million won (which was quite lenient because he'd only been working for one week) . Then he was told that he wouldn't ever be issued another visa, but also that he couldn't leave the country until he had paid the fine. He bought a flight, and tried to leave, but Immigration had flagged his name, so he wasn't even allowed to check in. In the end, he had to borrow money from his relatives to pay the fine before he could leave Korea.

I don't know if you'd really call that 'getting deported' though.

I know a few in my SMOE group that advertised on their facebook that they had privates. It did not end well for them.

I heard about a white dude who went to uni in Korea for undergrad, taught here for ten years, then got the boot when the new visa regulations went into affect in 2008.

You're right, of course Immigration didn't check it. They just made lots of friend with lots of Korean facebookers that saw it and wanted a quick buck. You put together the rest.

I know a few that got fined, detained and deported.

One of the events that stands out the most happened in 2004 when a teacher working at a Hakwon near the University I worked at was detained, fined and deported along with a return ban for teaching privates and tax fraud. He now lives in Western Canada.

Another example would be the folks in Busan who got arrested for drugs at a bar in the Busan National University area. They were fined, deported and some did jail time.

However, what do you consider a "bad reason" to be deported or a "no reason" to be deported?

Sorry for not clarifying. It stands out that the most popular way to get deported is to work without a visa or teach privates illegally.

I guess I have no idea what I meant at the time when I typed it! Sorry! Laughing

No worries.

Still, teaching private lessons illegally or for working without a visa is a valid reason to get deported.

I personally knew a woman who was deported. I suppose for an indirectly valid reason, but the reason I'm posting this is because of the absolute ignorance on the part of the authorities involved.

Her boyfriend returned from a sextour in Thailand and gave her HIV. This was years before the mandatory health checks, and it came out in a checkup she initiated on her own.

The doctor didn't say anything to her.

She found out the horrible news when a police officer and immigration agent came to her hogwan. In the same breath, she was told she had HIV, and had to leave the country immediately. They escorted her to her apartment, waited while she packed, and took her to the airport.

She paid the flight costs.

About 2 years ago a few western teachers in Ulsan got deported for having THC in their systems, got dragged away from their Hagwons and nothing was found in their apartments. Blood tests showed THC though.

It was another western teacher who reported their drug use

Naturally. The only way you get in trouble with the law in Korea is if someone else tells the cops on you. It's a tattle-tale system.

I met a guy in '96 that had come to Korea in the 80's as a Mormon LDS missionary, then quit the church and came back to Korea (teaching English) spoke really good Korean, got busted teaching on a tourist visa, paid the fine, got deported for 5 years, went back home, and somehow changed his name and got a new passport and went right back to Korea. I wasn't there to witness the return, but it was common knowledge and knowing this guy in the '90s I think he was able to return. Take that for what it is. 2nd hand hearsay.
