I WAS going to stay for a 5th year with EPIK, or so I thought. I was asked at the last minute to stay. Signed a contract, which they screwed up and I had to re-sign yesterday. Today, a teacher who speaks English (not my co-teacher) calls me and tells me I have to move out of my apartment by the end of the month and I have to find an apartment. I've lived in the same place for years.

They will pay me W400k/month for it. My co-teacher is on vacation next week and didn't have the guts to tell me, he had to wait until the weekend. I'm supposed to find an apartment MYSELF and move MYSELF.

After 4 years in the same place, this is what I get from the pricks. I'm so pissed right now, I could murder the asshole coteacher!

Are you sure it's not because the lease is up and the landlord hasn't offered the school a new one? Maybe it's not their fault?

What does this have to do with your job?

I don't know, why they're pulling this BS 2 weeks before the end of the contract. It's a large apartment complex that's only about 60% rented out. My co-teacher is retiring soon and is a lazy, worthless SOB, tho. He won't breathe hard unless he has to.

That absolutely sucks that you are getting shafted like that...but is it really your co-teacher's fault? Is your co-teacher your boss, the owner of the school, the principal, or some other administrator? Yeah, rhetorical question -- he isn't. Don't blame the messenger, man -- direct that rage where it is deserved, not at the poor guy that had the bad luck to have to tell you....

Crap rolls downhill -- I will bet none of this was his decision or doing, and he probably didn't have a whole lot of notice about telling you either. He may be a lazy SOB as you said, but I don't see how any of this is his fault...your school's fault, definitely, but not the unlucky schlub of a coteacher....

Get angry at the right people!

I would wait until Monday and get the full scoop.

I could be as easy as the landlord raised the rent who called the school to inform you. Just find out how much they raised it and if you can afford the remainder minus the 400,000won allowance or not.

I'd get a Korean friend to help you out on this one. Even call a friend call the landlord as soon as possilbe to work out a solution.

Sucks though that they didn't have the foresight to tell you sooner.

It might not be the school's fault. You still have your job. I thought you'd been fired based on your title.

The owner of my place decided that she wanted to rent to a Korean after my first year, because of an insurance fee she'd have had to pay for me to stay. I had to move house, but my school paid the moving fee.

If you don't have the key money, see if they'll set you up with another place, key money and all. If you have it, it might work out better to take the allowance.

Considering it was never your appartment at all this can happen.

Maybe the lease was up and the school had to move you out. Maybe there is anothe reason. Why not ask your boss before posting here in anger? Oups too late Wink

Just wait until Monday and ask your employer the reason for the move.

Yeah right! Probably just didn't want a foriegner there. Maybe other tenants complained. Your landlord might have said that as a way to evict you and to "save face". That's very important here. Also why your co-teacher didn't want to tell you OP.

Nope. I'm in the same building. A nicer apartment, actually. Higher up. I'm friendly with the management, one of the 2 guards, and the ajumma who cooks for the building. I give them all (except one of the guards) gifts for holidays, and I've gotten gifts as well. The ajumma sent up a bowl of kalguksu when she saw that I'd gotten back from the hospital! Even the manager asked if I was okay and if I needed anything from Homeplus. The owner of my place was just a *self edit* that couldn't be bothered to fill out some paperwork because it was just easier to rent to a Korean. Her loss. I left the place sparkling, and I hope that her current tenant leaves it trashed so that she has to fix all of the appliances and wallpaper.

There are quite a few foreigners in my building. The housing units are owned by different people, though. It's a means of income for a lot of the older folk. Whatever her reason, it worked out for me. It's quieter on an upper floor, and this apartment has a UV light dish dryer Wink

If the contract says you get housing, this is a violation. You can back out of the contract.

They might make it hard on you.

This implies prior thinking, agreeing, and signing.

This implies less thinking and less time to agree (negotiate). However, the signing could be seen as the same.

I am not understanding the premise. You worked 4 years, and then by your words "were" going to stay for a 5th year. That sounds like they DIDN'T come to you at the last minute.

Last minute would be where you WEREN'T going to work a 5th year, BUT the school came to you asking you to stay a 5th year.

So, your first 2 sentences seem to contradict each other. Please clarify.

I left Korea for a month, I hadn't signed a contract because I was planning to take another job. It fell thru, and at the last minute they asked me to re-sign. I did, now all this BS is happening.
