A record-breaking snowfall pounded South Korea's east coast on Saturday, stranding hundreds of motorists on highways and destroying dozens of houses, officials said.
President Lee Myung-bak ordered the military to help clear waist-high snow that blanketed the area and transport emergency food to isolated residents.
Some sections of a highway linking Seoul with Gangneung, a major city on the east coast, were once off-limits. A major road connecting several cities in the area, including Sancheok and Yangyang, was closed for 18 hours, stranding some 250 vehicles there under sub-zero temperatures.
According to the Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration, the amount of two-day snowfall in the area reached 110 centimeters in Samcheok, 100.1 centimeters in Donghae, 56.3 centimeters in Daegwallyeong, a mountain pass near the east coast, and 42.8 centimeters in Sokcho as of 5 p.m. Saturday.
Gangneung received 77.7 centimeters of snow on Friday alone, the heaviest single day record since weathermen began keeping records there in 1911, officials said.
All roads except for major motorways and houses in the city were buried under more than 1 meters of snow. Most taxis and city buses stayed away, and some drivers complained that they could hardly find their own cars in parking lots, let alone pulling them out.

Looked beautiful on the news. Similar to the record snows hitting Japan earlier this month.
Can't complain living here in the southeast where it's been dry and the Nakdong is at unusualy low levels. |

Yikes...I am moving to Sokcho in two weeks. I hope it's all gone by then. I hate the snow. |

Super pretty in Sokcho this weekend.
ucfvgirl: There'll certainly still be remnants in a couple weeks, its piled high everywhere. Heres hoping it doesnt warm up quickly or it'll be a slush nightmare. Spring in Sokcho goes back & forth between mild & frigid & you're likely to see more snow yet. BTW, welcome to a choice little corner of Korea! |

Did High-1 get any of it? They'll probably just push all the offending snow off their runs anyway, and put a fence around it. Still, makes it pretty to board when there is snow on places other than the runs. |

I'm sure High 1 got a bunch of snow. I just got back from Yongpyong. We were only going to go Fri-Sat but heard about road closures on Saturday and stayed another day. It was beautiful out there but the conditions on the advanced runs were bad. All the snow got choppy from the skiiers and got turned into moguls. Should be great now that they've had time to groom the snow more. |

No students today but had to report. |

Gangneung was basically shut down over the weekend, Now, on Monday morning, it is snowing again. I have rarely seen this kind of snow fall at one time and I'm a Canadian. |

I'm in Donghae and we easily got 105 centimeters. It made for some fun times this past weekend. Now it's snowing again. |

Gangwon Province is bracing for another heavy snowfall Monday, as the weather agency forecast up to 50 centimeters of snow for the region, asking residents to refrain from operating vehicles and to shovel the snow from the roads. |
Everyone had better stock up on groceries. |

We got a moderate amount of snow here in Ulsan and all the school teachers are being sent home at 2pm. For Ulsan, it's a pretty heavy load, though this is a pretty standard amount for Toronto. |
