I am contemplating using my savings from this year to go backpacking in India around October-end of December. I would be going with my husband. Has anyone ever been? I hear it can be incredibly frustrating but an amazing experience overall. I have done a fair amount of travelling but never really been "backpacking" before.
I would like to know.....
a. have you been?
b. what was it like?
c. Is 3 months enough?
d. in your experience what would you suggest, what would you avoid?
e. what is a realistic budget?
f. how safe did you feel?
g. if you had the choice would you go again? |

I would like to know.....
a. have you been? Yes, twice for a total of 4 months
b. what was it like? .....hectic, interesting, disturbing, beautiful, filthy, serene......
c. Is 3 months enough? for a good taste, yes.
d. in your experience what would you suggest, what would you avoid? Suggest ancient cities like Hampi, the lesser known temples and forts, staying in the one place for a week or two, I've never been south but I heard that it's way different to the north; Rajasthan is a must do, look after your health Avoid the large cities, trying to be too cheap, trying to rush around too much; travelling is exhausting there.
e. what is a realistic budget? Too hard to say....so many nice things to buy; maybe $80 per day at a rough guess, maybe less but again, factor in all the amazing crafts you'll see, a tour or two, 80 bucks easy for the two of you.
f. how safe did you feel? As far as terrorism goes, quite safe; on public transport, very unsafe
g. if you had the choice would you go again? |
I'd go again, but I'd be smarter next time. I'd like to hike in the mountains and stay away from the main tourist areas; they are a headache!
I'd seriously look into hiring a taxi and doing trips like that, that cuts out a lot of BS (even though you've got to experience some long distance public bus trips) and you can get off the well beaten track. |

I think you know the answer to this question already. I mean obviously not on a personal level, but I'm sure you've heard all about it. Anyway, Kurtz sums it up well.

For what? To see some of it? Of course. What is your goal? What do you hope to see and do?

suggest: golden temple in amritsar and the nearby border crossing on the Pakistan border. Obviously the Taj Mahal. The mountains.
Avoid: Delhi. And while Kurtz said avoid large cities, I didn't mind Amritsar or Kolkata. He's right though: take your time traveling, don't have the need to rush anywhere.

Depends on your standards and what you want to do and buy. I am a cheap traveler and spent less than $30/day. Since you're traveling with a partner, I think the two of you would be fine on $60/day since it will be shared accomodation. Then again, if you NEED a/c, a private bathroom, etc every day then maybe not.

As safe as any other developing country I've been to. As kurtz said, the #1 danger is being on the road. But crime and terrorism? Not really an issue, but maybe I'm just naive.

Of course! Wouldn't give it a second thought. |

Here's a recent thread.
Great country, but bring a face mask (essential for big cities), diarrhea pills, immersion water heater with plug adapter and keep a roll of toilet paper with you always. |

| Who was it who posted a link to the blog of a Chinese person who had been to India and they were just going on about how filthy it is, whilst also putting up photos showing poo all over the ground? |
