I'm in need for some good books about travel so instead of scouring dear Amazon, I'll see what you savvy travelers can suggest.
I've already read most of Bill Bryson's books, hilarious & excellent for the most part if you haven't read already.
I'll recommend In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin. Just finished that recently and found it to be great. |

I'm a huge fan of Eric Hansen, he's a real adventurer. Check out;
Birdman and the Lap Dancer (various short stories)
Motoring with Mohammed (A story about him returning to Yemen to find some stuff he had buried there)
Stranger in the Forest (Walking through Borneo being guided by Penan tribesmen).
Seven Years in Tibet. |

I quite like "Borders Up" by Vitali Vitaliev. It's about Eastern Europe and drinking. Rather insightful. |

Two of my personal favorites:
The Places in Between by Rory Stewart. He walks across Afghanistan.
The Ends of the Earth: A Journey to the Frontiers of Anarchy by Robert D. Kaplan. Written in the mid 90s so it's a bit dated in some ways but also interesting in hindsight. Overall it's a fascinating account of his travels through West Africa (Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone etc.), Rwanda, Egypt, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia (Azeribaijan and some of the Stans), China, India, Pakistan and South East Asia (Cambodia, Thailand). |

Pico Iyer.
I love the genre & have spent many enjoyable hours "traveling with" Morris, Theroux, Chatwin, Bryson, et al, but this guy quietly outwrites all of them. |
