I've been offered a position with a public middle school in Ojeon-dong.
I've noticed some people on this forum speak not so fondly of this neighbourhood:

Have you lived here? Regardless of that person's words, how is it?
I acknowledge that it's very near better areas in Anyang etc. But I would (at least somewhat) like a decent place to call home. |

The Uiwang EPC (English Premiere Center) where I work is in that neighborhood. Seems pretty nice to me. Quiet, mostly clean, plenty of little shops and restaurants, etc. Maybe I don't have much basis for comparison, but I don't see much of a problem with the area.
You might be teaching some of the same kids I see in the afternoons if you take a job there.  |

I noticed that the EPC in Uiwang is hiring for 3 teaching positions and I have been thinking about applying, how do you like working there? |

Ojeon-dong isn't bad. You'll be very close to Anyang, Anyang's famed "hagwon-ga" where lots of foreigners live and work, and a Lotte Mart.
I would never live in Bugok-dong, though. That's the part of Uiwang near Uiwang Station. It's a craphole, and line 1 sucks outside of Seoul (slow and unpredictable). |

About living on line 1 or line 4, which is better for you depends on your destination. If you'll travel south, line 4 goes to Ansan, and line 1 to southern Suwon. More likely you'll travel north, into Seoul. If you're travelling to western (especially southwestern) Seoul, then living in this area on line 4 in Anyang is not convenient.
On the matter of reliability, in my 40+ times travelling on line 1 I've only once encountered a delay, and that was in Gasan-dong, meaning, in Seoul. Regarding the wait for trains running on time, I don't notice a difference between line 1 or line 4. If there is a difference, then I'm confident the expected wait time for line 1 trains into Seoul is shorter.

I don't know Hagwon-ga very well, other than that it's home to many foreigners who work in the many hagwons. What else is special about it? I am curious :) |

EPC is great. The housing they give us is an adorable little villa in Anyang near Hagwon-ga, about a 7-10 minute bus ride (or 40 minute walk) from the school. Apartments are small but efficient and very nice, landlady is a peach. Anyone who gets my apartment will probably not have to buy a lot of extra furniture or housewares, since I'm probably going to be leaving on too short of notice to sell much (due to health issues, not the school's fault or anything). Apartments are equidistant to E-Mart (near Pyeongchon station) and the Uiwang Lotte Mart, so shopping is easy. Lots of fantastic restaurants, both Korean and western, in the area as well.
Pay is always on time, never any problems with the office staff (who nearly all speak English to some degree or another), and the kids are a ton of fun. It's a lot of work, as I've had to create a lot of the lesson plans/materials from scratch based on story books and so on for the Library Program, but the main part of the curriculum has textbooks and such. The groundwork has already been laid for a lot of the lessons, too, so it shouldn't be as difficult for a newcomer.
If you get my co-teacher, Nana, treat her well. She's amazing and works SO damn hard, and is a real sweetheart to boot! She will help you out with anything if you ask, and will appreciate a fellow hard-working teacher. The other Korean co-teachers are really great, too! I get along just fine with all of them, though I don't talk to them very often outside of work. Also, our boss totally treats us to dinner once or twice a week, and sometimes brings breakfast. Overall a really great bunch of people.
If I weren't dealing with health problems and missing my boyfriend so much, I'd totally stay on another year. I really lucked out with EPC. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good hagwon-ish experience. Since it's a government funded facility, it's a little more reliable and trustworthy than what I would expect from a hagwon. |
