6th trip to Boracay coming up.
You guys are pretty harsh on Manila. I suppose it's because I have a solid group of friends there who always show me a good time, but I try and pad my trips around the PI with a few nights in Manila on each end. I really enjoy it there.
There are amazing pockets of activity in Manila. Shopping, nightlife, and quite a few awesome venues for live music. However, if you're not with locals or don't know the lay of the land it can get tiring pretty quickly. |

I think having a friend to visit in Manila can make a world of difference but I personally would rather hit Cebu than Manila. The vibe anywhere in the Phils beats that of Manila, in my experience, but who knows, I might give Manila more time. |

i have found manila to be one of the best cities in the world for meeting other experienced travelers. by default it weeds out the wimps.......only serious travelers usually visit manila..... |

I heard that I have seen some impressive pictures. My wife won't do it, and if I were solo, I'd have to have sufficient time. That's the problem for many of us.

| Bohol is your place. Your 'other pleasures' are easy to obtain on Alona Beach. Nuts Huts is fantastic. Rent a scooter and head up north. |
i wanna go to Alona Beach but i just can't find a decent, inexpensive accommodation (hut, cottage, hotel...) online! please, can anybody recommend and direct me to a place of value? hotel websites?
are there plenty of places to stay at Alona for a reasonable price like Thailand that i can just go there and pick a place? |

there are loads of places that aren't listed online. i stayed at a place called citadel and that was super affordable if you are staying with another person. i think it was something like 500 pesos a night. |

Go to tripadvisor.com
It's the best website for hotels. |

Not sure what you define as inexpensive. Most places on Alona will cost you p1200-p2000 per night.
http://www.bohol.ph is the place to look for general information (and a list of hotels, resorts, pension houses, etc) all over Bohol and not just at Alona beach.
Personally, I like Alona Tropical but have had comfortable stays at many of the others as well.

| I prefer staying away from the Disneyland of resorts like Boracay. Davao is the best place to go for quiet, clean and relaxing resorts not filled with shoulder to shoulder foreigners. And inexpensive on top of that. Its worth a look. |

Yeah Davao is fine but if you travel around Davao in Mindanao then you have to be concerned about where to go and where not to go. Let's face it. Mindanao is filled with Muslim terrorists. Sure lots of places are safe, but lots of places are not.
Negros is by far the best vacation destination. It is not only one of the most beautiful islands, but very few tourists know about it. Dumaguete in the south is a beautiful, scenic, and quaint little town. It is a must see. From there there are several national parks only a short drive away. You can go dolphin watching up the coast and one of the most prestigious diving locations is in Apo island only a short drive south. Siquijor island is also a ferry ride away, and is one of the least populated islands in the Philippines (it is rumored to be haunted).
Leave Mindinao to Abu Sayaaf and check out Negros!! |

I'm going to hit Negros the next time I have an extended period in the Phils. What I heard about Dumaguete is that it's a college town filled with Iranian and Korean students learning English. I also hear you can do Dumaguete in one day but I do hope to go there. |

I went to Dumaguete, but it was maybe five years ago.
I didn't meet any Iranians anywhere, nor did I see any. Actually I didn't see any Koreans there at that time either.
I did see a TON of Filipino students absolutely everywhere. It's basically a very large college town - it seems to take up almost half of the town.
I also went to the Waterfront, which is basically the ONLY thing to see and go to besides walking around the university area. At least at that time, they didn't have any large air-conditioned malls like you see in all of the other PHilppines cities - basically a sancuary from the heat. |

My information is based on last year's edition of Lonely Planet Philippines. I've never been to Dumaguete. |
