Actually, I've heard some rural tech schools aren't so bad. It might be that they are in smaller towns that parents and teachers might be socially allowed to come down harder on them for misbehavior than their city counterparts. They do have different names like 'industrial', 'commercial', or 'agricultural' schools.

Well now, be careful. The government is attempting to remove the stigma of these schools by changing the names from "technical" to other, not so damning words. I myself don't work at a "technical" school, but at a "digital" school. Of course, all the neighborhood maps still list the place as a technical school.

I think the biggest thing for the rural agricultural schools is those kids ARE agricultural - that's what they are going to do, whereas in the city there are other visible options that have been closed to the students and they can see it and become resentful. I've heard the same thing from many friends and colleagues - the countryside is the place to be for a teach school, but still, not by much. Confused

OP. Welcome to the wonderful world of Technical High Schools. It seems Siheung is quite keen on Tech schools. I should know, I work for one! I signed on for another year recently. I'm still wondering why on earth I did that for. Oh well, only another 9 months to go!

A bit of advice, learn about teaching phonics (there's a short thread I posted about it last week) and task based activities. It works for me. Don't plan to hard. I've spent ages planning a lesson thinking that it would work only to watch it go down the toilet in the first five minutes. Don't worry too much if the students are loud and uncontrollable, it's not you. They are like that in every lesson.

Let me know if you want any other advice! As others have said in past threads, working in a Technical High School is essentially being in the trenches in the esl world. Sometimes you'll wonder why you ever bothered!

Didn't they already change the stigma from "Industrial" to "Technical"? My school has a really fancy english name. Easy to mistake it for a science academy but all the korean lettering still says "Industrial High School"

OP dido on teaching in the trenches. Imagine an inner city school back home, multiply it by 2 and add the language barrier and you've got a technical high school.

in Korean you'll hear "gong goh".

goh is high school.
gong is technical. The name of the school will be first. aka Seoul Gong Go.

Seoul Technical Highschool.

isn't Siheung home to one of the biggest if not the biggest industrial parks/factory areas in Korea?

consider the socio economic background and then ask yourself how many top academic performers you'll find in that environment.

In many ways you're dealing with the Korean version of the American ghetto inner city school. , aka broken homes, it's not "cool" to study, etc etc

Met a guy at orientation who's been working in Siheung for 6 years! at all kinds of public schools at all levels (not a tekkie HS though) When I asked him why stays there (not a particularly pleasant area to live at all) he told me at all schools he got the rural money bonus with the extra week of vacation. He's not out on the farm, just in a factory zone.

You should try to motivate them somehow.

Well, not necessarily hate it. It is what you make of it.

My kids have no motivation, they don't do anything, I never get to accomplish anything worthwhile. It's more baby sitting than teaching.

Don't get me wrong, I have some awesome students, but I rarely get to do anything with them as I'm always busy with the trouble makers. The teachers here are always busy dealing with shenanigans.

It's not for the feint of heart.

My suggestion if you work at a tech high school. Go in everyday with a big energetic smile, try your best and then...

...don't take it to heart when you completely fail, haha.

Its easy to say when you don't teach at one. On the occasional day you do get every one excited and actively participate (Without bribing) which is no easy feat. It's gone by next week. When your teaching this level its UNGODLY hard to find something interesting yet easy enough for them to do

I've found a thing. Very Happy

But I can't do it in class.

Crying or Very sad

I have 95% boys and they always talk about porno, and downloading porno. They also like drawing errogenous zones of both males and females, often on the school desks.

I was going to have them make their own short porno film in English where they'd be learning the imperative tense Twisted Evil

I can guarantee you they'd be plenty interested, and they'd probably learn something, but like I said.. it's a brilliant idea what will never see the light of day

Laughing

Why not do a drawing activity like it and pretend to get angry when they all make porno scenes?

Yeah, all you can do is try. I'm a bit of an optimist here but even if the kids don't learn too much English, some of your enthusiasm *may* rub off on a *couple of* the students. Don't be expecting your life story to be made into a Korean ESL version of this movie though.

that'd be hard to do. I'd almost surely start laughing, instead of even a fair pretend to be angry job. Which probably wouldn't go over super well with my female Korean coteachers Very Happy

LMAO... that reminds me. We did a gap fill in class and they had to draw pictures of what the sentence meant. (Its the only way to check if they really know what the hell they're writing) Someone wrote I "DPed" her with a really graphic picture.

Instead of getting angry my female co-teacher was trying to figure out what "DP" meant. She kept asking me... I was like umm...... it's not my place to say. Ask your husband

DP?

Shocked

I'd be rolling on the floor with laughter.

hey, how's her husband supposed to know?? Wink

anyways, I would have asked the kid just how he managed to do that by himself (because he used "I")

it's either "we" or he had some toys Very Happy but in English the term implies a plural Wink

lol it was priceless. You know them, they're grammar's all over the place. Thank god nobody in school knew what it meant, even the male teachers. Surprising right? So he only got punished for the pic which was a heavily grayed sketch. Hard to sort out the details unless you knew what the sentence meant. If they knew they would've kicked him out.
