and can't believe there's no Ikea here.

Ikea stores in Asia Pacific:

Australia

(China)

(Hong Kong)

(Japan)

Malaysia

(Taiwan)

Singapore

Singapore? The store probably takes up 10% of the land. Korea is completely surrounded by Ikea stores. There's even one in the Dominican Republic for crying out loud. It's not the high rent in Seoul because Hong Kong and Singapore are ridiculously high.
Protectionism? No demand? What the hell is going on here?

Damn your right! Why is there not Lotteria in Canada. I never once saw a E-Mart in the US. A Lotte department store in Australia - no way.

Sorry welcome to Korea, it is not the WEST. Not everything will be here. Heck Wallmart was here for a while then disappeared, Same with Tesco, merged with Homeplus.

Also try a little harder in the looking.

Ikea sort of came to Korea a few years ago, but in the end the prices where to expensive, and other Korean and chinese products are cheaper, so it pretty much died out or never grew.
