Not consistent with the view that China supports unsolicited attacks on the ROK/lacks a sense of justice (i.e. when China refused to endorse the findings of the ROK's international coalition which insisted that the North was responsible for the Cheonan incident; scientific tests later confirmed that the panel's findings were categorically false; yet, when the North offered to hold talks, the South demanded the North apologize for the Cheonan as a pre-condition, which led to the breakdown of the situation, and leaves the US-backed South as the one resposible for failing to do what it can to defuse the situation). |

Within 10 years time, maybe sooner, maybe already now, China and SK will be way more intertwined than NK and China. That is truly what North Korea fears. At that point they just lose everything. How can they threaten to shell Seoul if there are 100,000 Chinese nationals there and a bunch of Chinese mega-corporations?
Sooner or later South Korea and China will have a de facto Mutual Defense Treaty in regards to North Korea. The Chinese know which way the winds are blowing. The Norks have to as well. I guess its just a matter of who wants to hold the bag when its all over.
That and making sure that War-mongering nuts in the US and the hawk faction in China don't turn each other into public enemy #1 again and keep the eye on the terrorism ball and keep on trading with each other.
9/11 was a great thing (sounds bad, I know) for China and S. Korea and NE Asia. Pre-9/11 all of the Defense Dept. focus was on Taiwan Straits 2020- Million Man Swim by the PLA. We had that whole spyplane incident. After that- back burner. F-22s being cut, Conventional War systems being cut, Navy being told it needs to find new missions for the 21st century. Gates is focusing more on Spec Ops. Taiwan and China have undergone a tremendous detente over the last 10 years.
I'd rather have the GWoT anyday than Cold War II with China.
Conspiracy theory- The people who are trying to keep this Global War on Terror thing going as long as possible are in a sense the good guys because they are not causing the chaos that would ensue if China was public enemy #1. As things stand now with the US focused on Terror and China worried about Muslim separatists in the western provinces, the time is being bought for our strategic partnership/global economy to grow. Who knows? Maybe some people actually have had this as their game plan all along. |

Majority of South Koreans over the age of 25 already know this fact by heart. You'll see South Korean internet denizens cussing at their own politicians (mostly right wing) with strong insults. |
