I feel silly! Each time I to a search I get a lovely white screen.
Does anyone have a list of good Hagwons in and around Seoul?
Thanks |

There is no such list. There are a few blacklists, but most are outdated. The only way to know whether a hagwon is good or not is to first make sure their contract is fair and legal, then ask current and former teachers about their experience, and finally, actually working there. Everything could seem perfect until you get to Korea and discover it wasn't what it was advertised to be. |

You can go to the esl watchdog site, and look at the ones on the green list.
However, good hagwon is really an oxymoron. |

Not true. There are plenty of good hagwons. There are even more bad ones. The greenlist is also untrustable because it could be filled with fake employees talking about how great a school is when it's just the boss blowing hot air. |

What one considers "good" another will consider terrible.
It depends on your perspective, your experience, and your expectations as to what you will find to be "good".
Most people who have been around for a while have quit looking for the "good" hagwans and have focused on the "not too terrible".
I doubt that I could ever work in a hagwon again. I don't have the patience anymore to put up with all the crap. |

I worked for several fantastic hagwons that beat any public school job any day. They are out there, you just have to have patience, understanding the red flags and two faced liars, and the know-how to sift through bad contracts and companies.
Maybe that's the problem, it seems like those three characteristics would exclude 98% of waygooks. |

It is true that there are good hagwons out there, but they are difficult to find.
It is also true the green list is not reliable because certain employees will view things differently.
Since getting an after school gig, I have been pretty bias towards the hagwon. Also getting screwed out of pay by hagwons, i.e no severance, no last months pay, will tend to make you bitter towards the hagwon. |

So what are some of the names of these "fantastic" places?
You obviously are working somewhere else now so why did you leave? |

They were all private, non-chain hagwons. I think that by going for non chain places you'll get the most perks. Not surprisingly the best one was the one run by an American Gyopo who was fluent in both English and Korean.
University positions are better, though, career wise, than staying at a hagwon, so I went to do that. |

Catering to those who just gotten out of college with still an idyllic image of "work" in their mind is impossible.
That is why I only hire people with actual "working experience".
On the other hand, you have bosses who expect fresh graduates to work like veterans and know what they are doing.
These 2 incompatible expectations is what makes the ESL labor market such a shitty place to be in.
Yes, it is both the fault of the teacher and the boss. |

yeah, but there are exceptions, depends on the person. i went from a private HS position (dried up:)) to a kindie/hagwon and Im quite happy. Its more stress, but I dont have the same needs as I did even 3-5 years ago. Im quite happy. Believe it or not, all of that free time I had in the HS didnt make me more productive. |

Ok, can we just get some shout outs for good hagwons based on your experience. Not bad ones. If you don't have anything good to say about a particular Hagwon that is for a different post.
Please refrain from swimming around in the negative circle of rhetoric. It doesn't do much good. Yes, sigh I know people have been screwed over by hagwons, but that is not what I was looking for. Negative Nancy's and Ned's please move on if you please. |
