Seriously though, I think that they should knock down all that crap on Walking street and restore the beach there. Thailand doesn't need the sex industry to be beautiful and loads of fun. Imagine if people could actually go to Thailand with their families! |

I don't find it very family friendly either. Most of the islands are full of hustlers and money hungry, unfriendly mafia types. Even the taxi drivers are basically gangsters. I find the whole scene pretty unsavory, and it's way overpriced for what you get. I much prefer the north of Thailand myself (if I have to leave BKK, that is); the closer to Lao the better...
Unless of course you've got $600++/night to shell out at the Four Seasons on Samui or whatever, in which case I suppose it'd be pretty good... |

Bizarre! Why would anyone want to go there with his family? |

| I went to Phucket in 2006 and absolutely loathed it. Never have I gone to a place on holiday and looked forward to leaving so much. Spent much of the time in my hotel room, as it was impossible to go anywhere without encountering some breathtakingly foul Western scum (most of whom from Broken Britain, of course) and/or being pestered constantly by prostitutes. If I was a religious man, I would conclude that the Tsunami in 2004 was the clearest evidence yet of Divine Providence. |

So it's appropriately named?
I was there in 2009, a little more than a year after the tsunami. Evidence could still be seen, but the beach was nice, and the Graceland resort had one of the best buffets I ever ate. I was not pestered by prossies, but that was perhaps because I was accompanied by my fiancee. |

You probably should've gone to a beach resort instead (all-inclusive type)... or better yet just not bothered coming to Thailand (not that I could blame you, I don't mind living here so much, but would probably never come here on vacation knowing what I know). South of France is probably more to your taste.

for the record it's actually pronounced with a "P" sound, not an "F". There's a lot of unfortunate spellings, esp. with names (the female names Thitiporn, Watcharaporn, Pornthip, and Supaporn come to mind). At least they had they had the good sense to spell the king's name Bhumipol though (Thais pronounce 'L' as 'N')... |

Also, a gay friend said that Bangkok was appropriate. |
