Dear all,

I have an overnight layover in Taipei from 4pm on the Staurday and 12pm on the Sunday whilst flying from BKK to ICN in a couple of weeks.
What I'd like to know is if it is possible/feasable to head into downtown Taipei for a few drinks/cheap hotel and be back at the airport for 10am?

Can I get out of the airport on such a layover?
Do I need a visa (I'm British)?
How much is a taxi or bus into Taipei city?
How much would a cheap hotel or even dorm be?

I've had a short layover at Taipei before and really did'nt like the airport so I'd rather not spend the night there!

Thanks in advance

Depends.

Does it have to be Taipei? The airport is actually in Taoyuan. It would only be about a 10-15min. drive into Taoyuan. It is a big enough city, with some nice night life.

If you want to go into Taipei that is feasible too. I think Taipei would be about a 40min. drive. The bus is your best option. A bus is very inexpensive. There are many nice hotels in Taipei. It is possible to find a hotel for $30 but you may have to look around. Better just to spend some money on something nice. A visa is no problem. You can get a landed entry visa at the airport. Getting to the airport in the morning will be more of a challenge. It is possible to get an airport bus from Taipei Main station, but it is a little hard to find. A taxi to the airport will cost upwards of $30-40. Make sure you are clear that you want to go to CKS since there is a local airport in Taipei also.

Hope that helps.

P.S.
Make sure you hit a breakfast stand in the morning. They are fantastic. It is one of the things I miss the most about Taiwan. They have an orange and yellow sign. It is open air and they cook different egg, bacon and beef dishes. Get a 'bacon dambing'. It is an egg cooked and rolled in a crepe. Fantastic.
