What kinds of stuff would you send your friend in the peace corps?

She's in Guyana South America. Somewhere out...there. In the heart of Darkness.

I was in China in the early 90's and while it wasn't the heart of darkness we were only a local call away.
I recommend stuff like candies, snacks, teas, and such that she can't find there. Reading material or some type ebook if that's easier. DVDs of favorite TV shows or movies are good. Emails and letters are your lifeline sometimes and I think people back home never quite get that. I always appreciated my favorite brand of socks and underwear as well. The local stuff never worked for me.

I was in the Peace Corps in West Africa a few years ago and any sort of packages were always great. Foods, powdered drink mixes, snacks, candy, magazines, anything.... No matter how large or small a package was it was always nice to get mail on mail day! Your friend will appreciate anything.

Some personal spending money as they don't really get a salary outside of basic expenses being taken care of. Maybe coffee if your friend likes it. Chocolate, pasta, and other dry goods would also be greatly appreciated. I could write a list a mile long on what your friend would greatly appreciate, but that would be a bit long. Every thing from cotton briefs to Ivory soap to bags of Hambeans are useful as your friend will be roughing it if no one is sending anything.

Thank you for your replies. I need more specifics. I do appreciate your time, and ah, since, ah i am a male bear. she is female bear. i need help on that. she has relatives and friends, so i am not the only bear friend she has.

Give me a list, make it prioritized, and i will never drag you off into the woods like the other bears, ever...scouts honor. I can get her a book if she's been wanting something specific, she is a go-out-and-save-the-world bear girl. Very active, degree in Computer Science. No shortage of money in her bear clan.

I'm just wondering what the top best things were that you would have liked to have.

I've been in Guyana, spent a week in Georgetown and a week in the boonies... 8 hours of boat & van rides to God knows where. I never did much shopping in Georgetown. There is plenty of local fruit to buy, mostly ate chicken, rice and fish. In town it's easy to get stuff you need plenty of shops. If she's out in the boonies, then you are going to need more portable gear.
Water down there is rough on your system- if she has a water filtering system then something like Emergen-C, which are flavored vitamin packets are great! You're not reallying eating a balanced diet. Just don't send kool aid.
Biodegradable soap for bathing and washing clothes in the river.
Bug spray or better yet a mosquito net. Spiders bigger than my hand come out at night and you want to be sleeping in a net! They aren't poisonous but they will really freak you out when you wake up with one on you.
Kraft mac & chz was a luxury- people were in bidding wars over it. I had a portable stove to heat my food and everyone wanted to borrow it.
They love playing soccer in Guyana. It's a really great ice breaker if you're hanging with the locals... don't forget a pump.

I sent a package to my friend who is serving in Afghanistan .and she specifically asked me for cosmetics. Lipsticks, lip balm, lotion, sunblock, maybe some nail polish, (clear polish has many alternative uses) and other things that say "I realize that you are a girl." Also, if she wears her hair medium to long, Korea is a great place for hair accessories. There are whole shops devoted to clips, barettes, and ponytail holders, and they don't cost a lot.

I'm following sugarloafster and rockystar - just need to make a list now. I guess she'll be in the boonies because she asked for magazines, no internet for awhile I bet. Poor thing. Not to mention that she won't have any a/c for the summer that's coming. No way I could ever live w/out my sweet cold a/c.

When you say you're both "bears"...

what, are you both furries or something?

Nah it was just a joke, she's a girl and I'm a guy, and we're both straight people, no weirdness. My user name is based on a Native American named 'Died by bear' a tribute to his grandfather that was killed fighting a big mean bear on a mtn.

Edit: omg, just googled 'furries' that's very interesting, I'd heard about them a few years ago but it was one of those things you flush out of your mind after a few seconds. Even more interesting was the very, very long article in wiki on Therianthropy, or Therians - wow. just wow.
